1998-10-06 BEVERLY COUNCIL ON AGING BOARD
Regular meeting, October 6, 1998
Members present: Leslee Breen, Joe Dettore, Bob Marshall, Tom Scully, Ellen Skryness,
Nancy Winter, Tom Saunders, Joan Fairbanks, Loretta Hoadley. Absent: Cynthia
Montalbano. Excused: Susan Albiero
The meeting was called to order at 1:32pm by Joe Detorre. The minutes from the
September meeting were accepted after a correction by Leslee.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT BY LESLEE BREEN
New driver/dispatcher Cynthia Lizotte began work yesterday and it is working out well
and should continue to do so.
Gordon has a beeper in case of emergencies. Gordon and Leslee are in the process of
looking for a part time custodian. Robert Robeas is presently in training as a volunteer
fill in.
Rental packet is finalized. Leslee is still talking to the city solicitor but everything
seems fine. The three rentals in September generated approximately $900.
The Senior Soiree will be on December 30, a Wednesday, and everything is going well.
There will be no Bingo that evening from four to eight.
A new intern is teaching piano and origami. A watercolor class may be coming. She is
at Endicott..
OLD BUSINESS:
No response yet from the City Council about naming the building.

Peter DeN6neio requested the cost of an 80 by 50 foot addition to the kitchen for
storage. Tom said that there is a specific process with the City Building Commission and
it needs a long lead time. Bob made a suggestion to invite Peter to a board meeting.
Leslee said she could discuss our strategic plans with Peter. Tom made a motion that
Leslee discuss our strategic plans and how surplus money fits into these plans and Nancy
seconded.
Lots of input was given at the follow up meeting for Senior Day at the Park. Next year
there will be more specific planning of tables. The City Council Committee meetings at
COA have worked out well in Suite A and will probably continue into November. The
MBTA and other transportation providers are willing to meet with each other after the
new year begins.
NEW BUSINESS:
On November 22 the Friends of COA are doing a fund raiser with other non profits at the
North Shore Shopping Mall which will be closed to the public on this evening. It's $5.00
a ticket and anyone can go.
A new Public Health Director, William Burke, is coming and will need a key and
access code. He can sign the key agreement. He begins October 19. Tom Scully will
discuss the space needed for the Health Dept. with him when he arrives.
The Girl Scouts requested a rental waiver for the hall on March 20 for a badge
ceremony. The rental fee would normally be $500. Joe suggested that certain areas of the
building be off limit. Tom Saunders said they might want to use the GAR Hall which is
free. (plus custodial) George White is the contact person. Bob recommended a week rate
fee of $250 instead of the weekend rate (plus custodial) with the suggestion of the GAR
Hall.
A private party request for a boy earning an eagle scout award for a rental waiver on
November 7, 4:00 - 7:00pm was denied because its a private family party.
The Friday after Thanksgiving COA will be closed if other city offices are closed.
Tom called the Mayor and Linda, his secretary, will call Leslee back and let her know the
status.
Ourmeetings are public. If notified beforehand anyone can put an issue on the agenda.
Fifteen minutes can be set aside at the start of our meetings for public requests if needed.
This works better than having an at large member of the board.
Motion to adjourn made be Nancy Winter and Tom Saunders seconded. The meeting
ended at 3pm. The next meeting is on November 3. (Election day, voting upstairs)
