Secretary's Report: Minutes were accepted as written from the February 5, 2019 meeting.
Director's Report
Building Concerns and Usage
We have received an estimate Bass River carpet to correct a problem with floor and carpeting in
the upstairs hallway. To patch the problem, the estimate is $627.40 and to fully correct by
patching the floor crack underneath the carpet is $3,022. The Board members present
recommended that we go for the full repair so long as the money is available.
The Recreation Department is using the building for spring programs on Monday and
Wednesday evening. They have hired a building monitor to open and close the building.
AARP tax program has gone well, will be finished on April 11, 2019
Administration and Finance
MaryAnn reviewed the budget and told Board that Mayor Cahill had requested belt tightening
through fiscal year end. We will realize some savings from the temporary vacancies in staff
positions. Mayor also requested that we use $5,000 of the state formula grant to pay bills
typically allocated to the municipal budget.
Enterprise fund expenses are slightly ahead of revenues YTD.
Programs and Events
Red Sox event was attended by over 100 seniors — a great event
St. Patrick's Day party is scheduled for March 14
Brunch and Learn on Environmental workshop planned by Community Engagement Fellow is on
March 12
Meetings /Activities Clients
MaryAnn has participated in a Rotary video to be shown later on in the spring.
Clients of Concern — Blair Smith has been handling the most difficult client situations that occur.
A participant was suspended for three weeks due to violating the standards of independence in
regards to his inappropriate remarks and behavior toward a staff member.
MaryAnn and Patti met with a Bailey Bishop, a Financial Planner and member of the Essex
County Estate Planning council
Match Day at Merrimack on February 22 was a success, we hope to get our first choice for
fellow for the next academic year.
Personnel Updates
MaryAnn reported that a new Assistant Director has been hired and will start her position on
March 7, 2019
The Outreach Coordinator position is still vacant.
The Transportation Coordinator position is still vacant
Committee Meetings
One scholarship was approved for a trip to NH
The Awards Committee will meet in April to discuss the "Senior of the Year" nomination
process.
Old Business
Strategic Plan — Claire -Marie Hart has spoken to some of the city councilors about attending a
board meeting. Don Martin and David Lang have been invited. Date of their attendance to be
determined she will also invite councilor at large, Julie Flowers to an upcoming Board meeting
New Business
The City of Beverly, Human Rights Committee will meet at the Senior Center on Friday, May 2
in Rec. Room A. They are interested in hearing from seniors about their experiences living in
Beverly_ They will provide refreshments; we will provide coffee.
The Essex County Estate Planning Council will submit a proposal for the Board to consider at
the next meeting. MaryAnn will send the proposal out in advance of the meeting.
Announcements
Emmett Schmarsow from EOEA will be hosting a Board training on March 28 — members are
invited to attend.
