1) 5 Broadway Applicant: Design to the Nines
The applicant is returning after the signage application was continued from the
December 2018 DRB meeting. The applicant is applying for a projecting sign and
window signage. The bracket will be above the arched door, the same as how Dunkin
Donuts and Tartine signs (on the same building) are hung. It will be above the arch so
the projecting sign would be slightly in the window but above the door and follows the
height requirement of the highest point being no higher than 15 feet above the sidewalk,
and the lowest point being no lower than 9 feet above the sidewalk. The window
signage will be on the door. The signage complies with the Ordinance.
The applicant notes that she did did not have time to meet with Rachel Matthews to
discuss the design for the projecting sign. The Board notes that if the three businesses
in the space decide to develop signage together, they could look at the Beverly Main
Streets (BMS) grant program. The Board noted that the black and gold logo on the
window signage is different from the projecting sign; the applicant stated that the blue
color on the projecting sign comes from the website. The Board commented the
projecting sign is very busy with a lot of fonts, and feel drivers going by will not be able
to take in the signage. The Board suggested looking for the Sign Improvement Grant
program from BMS in March /April, and take the few months to prepare a new sign
design and application.
There being no further questions or comments regarding this matter:
Flannery: Motion to approve the signage for Design to the Nines as
presented. Hutchings seconded. The motion carries (6 -0).
2) 112 -114 Rantoul Street Applicant: Frank
The applicant's business is going to be called Frank. The window signage will be made
to allow information to be added onto it to show the public who they are, what food will
be served, etc. The signage includes the name of the business and the approximate
times of the opening, with information being added to it as time passes. The signage will
not be illuminated. The applicant notes that the signage will be temporary, and
Hutchings clarifies that although the signage is temporary, because it is up for more
1
than two weeks, DRB approval is needed. The applicant would like the signage to be up
for 30 days starting in February. The applicant is here at the January meeting to get
approval, produce the signage and put it up in February for about a month.
There being no further questions or comments regarding this matter:
Cook: Motion to approve the signage as presented as temporary signage
for a sixty -day time period. Flannery seconded. The motion carries
(6 -0).
3) 5 Broadway Applicant: Molly Booth Interiors /Made with Love by K.Love
The applicant is proposing window signage on two windows with signage for each
business on separate windows. Signage meets the criteria of 20% of window space.
The Board noted that lettering and styles are very different, and the applicant stated that
all three businesses are different. The Board noted that there is a lot going on for a
small space.
There being no further questions or comments regarding this matter:
Cook: Motion to approve the windows signs as presented for the
December. Flannery seconded. The motion carries (6 -0).
4. New /Other Business
The DRB discussed the design review process for signs and for sign approval in the
City of Beverly. Non - conforming signs are posted in the city without going through the
approval process. The Board discussed ways to look at compliance.
Improvements are scheduled for Cabot Street with the approval of a grant; there will be
sidewalk and light improvements, and maybe repaving. DRB would like to review of any
plans for Cabot Street.
5) Adjourn
Cook: Made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Matthews seconded, all in favor.
The motion carries (6 -0).
The meeting adjourned at 7:10 pm.
