Update on the City Roll Out of the New Trash Program
Harutunian reported that the sustainability meetings that were held by the City were very
successful and thanked the Committee members for their assistance and for attending the
meetings. He reported that between 30 -50 people attended the meetings and notes that the 6th
meeting was cancelled due to weather.
He reported that JRM, the City's trash contractor attended three of the meetings and provided
helpful information to residents. He also noted that Change Is Simple, and the Beverly
Engineering Department attended the meetings as well and noted that the Bring Your Own Bag
Committee participated in the meetings as well.
Harutunian reported that the overflow bags for residents are available at City Hall and the first
five bags are free with proof of residency during business hours and there will be two occasions
to get them on Sunday May 8, 2018 at the Rantoul Street Celebration and in the City Hall
Parking lot from 9 -12 on Saturday, May 12.
Bring Your Own Bag
Harutunian reported that the Bring Your Own Bag Ordinance will be submitted to the Beverly
City Council and if it is successful would take effect in January of 2019. He also noted that the
are looking at providing some reusable bags for residents and are in the process of looking at
purchasing them and ways to distribute them, whether to charge for them. He notes that funding
for them is key as well noting that they are trying to stay away from sponsorships by businesses.
Higgins notes that the City has asked the Committee for funds to help with the cost of the bags
and that matter will have to be voted on at another time when the Committee has a quorum.
