April Veteran's Council MinutesVETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING April 26, 2018 Meeting Held at City Hall, 191 Cabot Street, 3rd Floor, Beverly, MA Meeting was called to order at 5pm by Jerry Guilebbe. Veterans Council Members Present: Jerry Guilebbe, President Charles "Buddy" Rehal, Vice President Susan Moran David Perinchief Robert (Bob) Laws Ron Genest Chuck Clark Advisory members and guests: Paul Lance, VFW President Cory Paulette Ken McKay The minutes were emailed to all council members for review. Jerry Guilebbe made a motion to accept minutes from March meeting. Motion was seconded and carried. Financial Report— David Perinchief. • Budget items for next year — Request for Veterans Day was increased to $1,000.00. Memorial Day was increased to $11,700.00. There will be an updated financial report. Memorial Day— Everything is in place. • Independence Park point of contact will be Ron Genest. David has the flags in his office. Flowers have been ordered. Iron tree was contacted. Moore GMC is providing and SUV. Coady's towing is transporting the tanks. Another wreath will be ordered from Ward's Florist for the front of City Hall. Ron Genest is the contact for the trolley. • Troop 4, Girl Scouts, and members of the Ryal Side Civic Association will flag North Beverly Cemetery. Veterans, ROTC, and Beverly Hospital will flag Central Cemetery. North Beverly Elementary will flag St. Mary's Cemetery. Paul Weinberg will flag the Jewish Cemetery. Susan Moran will place the flag at Ruben Kennison's grave in Danvers. Old Business — • The Sig Sauer shoot will cost $6,000.00, the sale of tickets will cover that cost and there will be $3,000.00 left over to help pay for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. • The veterans benefit fair has been put on hold. • Bob Laws made a motion to provide a partial scholarship to send the son of a local veteran to summer camp at Lynch Park. Motion was seconded and carried. • Korean War medals have been sent out. David has two left. Once the mayor signs off on the letters, they will be sent out. VETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING April 26, 2018 Meeting Held at City Hall, 191 Cabot Street, 3rd Floor, Beverly, MA Vittori plaque — Buddy Rehal spoke to Mike Collins regarding the plaque from the dedication at Memorial Middle School. Mike is looking into placing all the veterans' plaques from Memorial Middle School in a new location where the public can view them. New Business — • The Military Order of the Purple Heart is shutting down because they are out of money. Post commanders need to get together with state and national commanders to ensure that the local posts keep going. Kristine Babcock at North Shore Community College will be helpful in helping to reach the veterans in college to find out what they want and need from the posts. Events for the younger veterans will help draw them in. Rainforest Reptiles has offered to put on a show for local veterans and their families. • The council will think about expanding to outside events and creating a year round calendar of events. • David Perinchief sent letters to all veterans that just came home. He got one response from a Staff Sergeant, who suggested a dinner to meeting the mayor and local officials. • Honors Flight - David will ask the Mayor to do a reverse 911 to inform any WWII, Korea, and Vietnam Veterans. • Jerry suggested having Stop & Shop gift cards on hand for veterans in need. David will talk to Stop and Shop to find out when /if they expire. • David to contact Estelle Rand to find out what is going on with the GAR Hall. Jerry made a motion to adjourn.
