November 2017 Veteran Council Meeting (2)VETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING NOVEMBER 16, 2017 MEETING HELD AT CITY HALL, 191 CABOT STREET, 3 RD FLOOR, BEVERLY, MA Jerry Guilebbe called meeting to order at S:OOpm. Members present: Jerry Guilebbe, President Charles "Buddy" Rehal, Vice President Susan Moran, Secretary Donald O'Connor Robert Laws Tim Smith Paul Weinberg Advisory members and guests: Paul Lance, VFW President Lt. Col. Paul Judge Old Business: Bob Laws requested correction to October minutes. Addition: Jerry and Bob, co- council Beverly Elks. Added $100 contributed to Veterans Day budget Jerry made a motion to accept the corrected minutes. Motion passed. Jerry made a motion to suspend the regular meeting and go right to David P. with financials and post - veterans' day activities. David — Financials. $13,000 in veteran council account. Marked for needy veterans in the area. We need to get a status of the horse for Memorial Day from Ron Genest Discussed the conflict of times with schools for Veterans Day assemblies. We need to discuss this with Kevin Hartunian and the school department. Discussed the need for additional money for food budget for next year. Spear post paying out $1500 for food. Veteran Council will need to put together a request to Bruce Doig, Bryant Ayles, Kevin Hartunian, and the Mayor to increase the budget. David made a motion to put in a request to increase the budget to $2,000. The motion was seconded and the motion passed. David brought the issue with cars parking on the sidewalks on Herrick Street and Park Street. There has been an improvement in the parking. New Business: Tim Smith is resigning his seat because he is moving. Paul Lance, VFW president, will be taking his position. Jerry Guilebbe will be removing the flags from St. Mary's Cemetery with the help of teachers (5) and students (25) from Harborlight Montessori School. The flags will then be given to David for cremation. Discussed having students from Harborlight Montessori help to remove the flags every November and give them a citation. Jerry mentioned that the Beverly Salem Elks is planning their first annual Haunted House next October on Bow Street. Proceeds are going to sharing is caring to support local schools, tools for schools, and veterans' associations. They want to raise $7,000 - $8,000 and will be looking for sponsors. It is still in the planning stage. Buddy made a motion to skip the December meeting. The motion was seconded and passed. The next meeting January 25` @ 5pm Going forward, meetings will be moved to the 4` Thursday of the month. David will talk to Wes Slate and lock in the rooms. Good of the Order: Jerry mentioned that Veteran's Day the Veterans Day activities had a good turn out this year. CareOne at Essex Park sent a Thank You for giving out certificates and flags. They would love to have two people come every month for coffee and donuts on a Saturday morning. Discussed coming up with a plan for regularly scheduled activities to be coordinated and put into a calendar. Memorial Day will be May 28th. Discussed having all the veteran posts come together at a neutral location, such as the Carriage House for a sit -down dinner. It would be the week before Memorial Day and be a networking event. Paul Judge suggested having it at The Beverly Golf and Tennis Club. Mayor Cahill has written off the room fee in the past. David will talk to Bruce Doig and the golf course before setting a date. Buddy wants to thank Tim Smith for pins for the veterans and Jerry for the certificates. An artist from Colorado was chosen for Beverly Vietnam Veterans Memorial plaza. The sculpture will be of a young man in high school with dungarees, t- shirt, baseball cap and AWOL bag sitting on the stone in front of the bench waiting for the bus into Boston. There will be some tablets put into the gardens with indirect lighting and will be blue tooth activated so you can learn about the Vietnam War and those killed in action. Budget was $58,000 she came in at $58,000. $20,000 has already been collected and another $15,000 is in the pipeline through a state grant. Some of the Korean War medals have arrived. David will need help to find recipients or their families. Jerry will contact the Cabot Theater about having the presentation of the medals at the Cabot. Buddy made motion to adjourn.
