Meeting Called to Order: 2:35 pm by Claire -Marie Hart, Co- Chairperson
Secretary's Report March meeting minutes were accepted as written.
Director's Report
Building Issues /Usage
MCOA will host a SNAP Training at the Center on April 11
On April 13 we will host the DOT/MARTAP bus driver training.
AARP /RSVP tax Preparers will remain on site every Thursday until April 13
Planning Dept. use of building took place on March 30 in the evening.
NBC - Channel 10 was here on March 21 to do a story on Dottie Stewart, the 95 year old world
rowing champion who lives in Beverly. The reporter interviewed MaryAnn and the Tuesday
afternoon exercise class was filmed in the background.
Administration and Finance
Mary Ann discussed the YTD Budget report in length. There are two more months left, and so
far we are right on target. We have spent 71.6% of the year's budget to date.
The rest of the Budget is in line. Elder affairs grant looks good.
Senior Soiree revenue was down a little this year.
Meeting scheduled with Mayor Cahill to discuss the budget on April 11
Mary Ann met with Bruce regarding the need for an additional social worker.
Elderly Domestic Violence Training in San Antonio - grant was funded - MaryAnn and Jessica
will attend training to take place May 9 through May 12th
Programs and Events
Volunteer Appreciation Program will take place at 4pm on April 13 Board members invited.
The Wrap up meeting for the Breakfast Club will take place at 1pm at the Beverly High School
on April 13
A Volunteer Information session has been scheduled for April 27 The property tax work -off
program will be featured.
Mayor Cahill and Rep. Jerry Parisella volunteered for approximately two hours to help deliver
meals with the Senior Program, Meals on Wheels.
Intergenerational Event "UP" held on April 18 during school vacation week.
Beverly Athletic Club to launch a presentation and Lunch on April 21" entitled "Managing your
Back Pain."
The Mayor will be hosting a Neighborhood Meeting at the BCOA on May 9 th from 10 -11:30 am
May is Older American Month.
The authors and founders of "Our Bodies, Ourselves will be here on Wednesday, May 17
a panel discussion from 12:30 to 2:30 pm cost of $3.00. The discussion will be on "our bodies
ourselves -then and now" more in depth information can be found in the garden city courier April
edition.
Meetings/ Activities /Clients
Seniorcare Inc. is hosting COA Appreciation event on April 12 from 3 -5p.m. MaryAnn, Jessica,
Bob and Claire -Marie will attend.
The SSU intern completed a project on safety in the workplace, after having interviewed staff on
their concerns and ideas for improving safety.
MaryAnn and Jessica attended the CHNA area meeting at the Salem 5 on March 29
The Northeast Chapter of the Red Cross now has a free smoke detector installment program and
the Director, Frederica Doeringer attended the Elder at Risk Task Force to discuss ways to
implement this in Beverly.
Mary Ann's Editorial on Elder Self Neglect was shared. Also, a workshop on the topic was held.
Committee Reports
Scholarship Committee
The Committee awarded a Scholarship for eye glasses.
The Committee awarded a Scholarship for a class on writing.
The Committee awarded a Scholarship for a trip though the Council.
Awards Committee
The Senior of the Year Nomination forms will be inserted in the May newsletter and mailed out
to schools and churches in the area as well.
Old Business
Mary Ann handed out the proposal from UMASS Boston for the Needs Assessment that had
been approved at last month's meeting. She began discussion and Larry addressed his concerns
that UMASS may not be as focused on our city. Suggested that they may be too "Cookie Cutter"
to really suit our needs. The entire board participated in a conversation regarding his concerns.
Mr. Albert then decided to leave the meeting before it adjourned.
Since the board had already voted affirmatively at the March meeting, it was agreed that
MaryAnn should go forward and submit the contract to City Hall for final approval.
Personnel Updates
The Transportation Coordinator has been out on Medical leave since March 15
Greg and Julie attended a workshop on Communication Styles.
Greg attended a conference on LGBT and aging issues at SSU.
Jessica attended training on workplace safety.
New Business
Next Meeting will be Tuesday, May 2, 2017 for a review of the FY '18 proposed budget.
