Minutes Feb 7 2017Beverly Council on Aging Board of Directors Meeting Minutes Date: February 7, 2017 Place: Beverly Council on Aging Senior Community Center Board Members Present: Bob Hobbs, Cynthia Montalbano, Claire -Marie Hart Jessica Wistran, Larry Albert Staff Present: MaryAnn Holak, Jessica Waggett Prior to the start of the BCOA meeting, the board heard a presentation from the Director of the Girdler House, Kathy MacNeill and two members of their Board. The Girdler House has been part of Beverly for 131 years as a home for senior women. Wonderful ocean views, three home cooked meals, staff coverage is 24 -7 rates are affordable. Additional information on Girdler House is available through the Council. Claire -Marie Hart called the meeting to order at 2:50pm Secretary's Report January Meeting notes were approved as written. Director's Report Safety Concerns Project was discussed. Mary Ann discussed the Photo Voice Project. Building The board had a discussion on the Gale Associates Project. Larry posed questions regarding the exact information that would be gathered. MaryAnn will defer to Michael Collins, Commissioner of Public Works as a grant has been awarded to Public Services to complete a portion of the project. The Beverly Community Council will meet at the Center on February 91h The Friendly Garden Club's request for use of the hall on May 19 & 20 was approved Recreation Department Spring Classes will be held Monday& Wednesday evenings at the Center Administration and Finance Review shows that YTD Budget is in line. February Newsletter included the donor list for FY' 16 Margaret Sullivan passed away. Family has requested that donations in her memory be sent to the Center. The main hall of the Senior Center is named in honor of Margaret's late husband. BCOA has received the $350.00 Cultural Grant. Beverly Hospital /Laney Grant will be filed before the application due date of February 17 Program and Events We will not be hosting a Mayor's Symposium but rather a community meeting for the public to learn of projects around the city and to meet city department heads. Paul Guanci will be a guest on Living the Good Life. Parkinson's Fitness class is underway. The Center will hold a Valentines Party on February 9th Breakfast Club meets on February 9th Valentine's Day program will take place on February 13 Twenty -five people will be attending the new session of enhanced fitness. Class meets Monday and Wednesday afternoons at the Center and Friday afternoons at the YMCA. Meetings/ Activities /Clients MaryAnn read several thank you notes from seniors that received the holiday baskets. Information for a Caregiver column has been submitted to the Salem News. Jessica will attend the Sheriff's meeting for TRIAD on February 10 Outreach meeting at Upton Place. Outreach mailings will be sent out monthly. New public records request law -Mary Ann and Jessica met with City Solicitor Eitan Goldberg to discuss the new law and how it might impact the information retained at the Senior Center. Mayor Cahill's state of the city meeting was well attended. Senior Care handled the report of a senior sleeping at the library. Personnel Updates: We had one candidate for the part -time bus driver position. He did not have the proper license to be considered for the position. The position is still open. Michelle is our intern from NSCC. Gordon College Intern is still pending. Merrimack Fellow application has been submitted. The application has been filed for a student next year. Jessica will be attending the Gordon College intern job fair to be held on February 23r Committee Reports: The Scholarship Committee met and approved one scholarship. The Awards Committee did not meet this month. New Business Mayor Cahill has not appointed any of the people submitted for consideration to the Board. We need to continue to brainstorm potential members. Unfinished Business: We are still waiting to hear from the Solicitor's Office on the Revised Standards of Independence. The board continued to discuss contracting with the UMASS Boston Center for Social & Demographic Research on Aging to complete a community needs assessment. It was agreed to invite the researchers to a meeting which board members could attend to learn more about the proj ect.
