Meeting Minutes
Date: March 8, 2016
Place: Beverly Council on Aging Senior Community Center
Members Present: Blair Smith, Bob Hobbs, Cynthia Montalbano, Ann Horrigan,
Larry Albert, Claire -Marie Hart, Jessica Wistran, Esquire
Staff Present: Mary Ann Holak, Jessica Waggett, Bruce Doig,
Meeting Called to Order: 2.35 pm
Secretary's Report February meeting minutes were accepted as written_ January meeting did
not have a quorum_ The January Director's notes were submitted and accepted by the board_
Director's Report
Building
Plumbing issues were discussed, currently looking into the cost for auto flush units_
The Building is twenty -five years old next year_ Mike Collins, Commissioner of Public Works
suggested having Gale Associates submit a proposal to do a needs assessment of capital budget
building needs as the building continues to age_ Information to be dispersed at an upcoming
meeting_
Administration and Finance
The YTD Budget report 2/3 through things are looking good, we are currently under budget_
Good shape 64.6% on target_
FY' 17 Budget Proposal is due on March 18
Elder Affairs Grant $64,000.00, we are looking to get back $8,000.00, from last year_
Planning to implement a community wide survey to assess needs_
Programs and Events
Breakfast Club- Award from National Institute of Senior Centers was announced at the February
25' meeting and participants each received a t -shirt in recognition of the award_ The Mayor,
Superintendent of Schools, School Principal and others were in attendance to celebrate_ The
Salem News covered the event with an article entitled "Seniors, meet Seniors," That is, seniors
from our BCOA population, and seniors in the BHS population_
St Patrick's Day Parry Thursday the 17' Corn beef and cabbage will be served for
lunch and the Irish Singers will be the entertainment_
The MCOA grant funded balance class is underway with approximately 20 participants-
Meetings/Activities/Clients
Tax preparation is underway on Thursdays through April 14 with AARP and RSVP as co-
sponsors-
Flyer on the Tax Work off Program was distributed and discussed_
Mary Ann stated she attended CHNA meeting help inform on the emerging pressing needs of
older adults in our service area_ Three top areas for work include= behavior health need of older
adults managing chronic health conditions across the life span and support for caregivers_
MaryAnn will be meeting with North Shore Director's to discuss Standards of Independence
Two Park Beautification volunteer information sessions will be held on March 16 and 24 th _
Jessica and Devyn met candidates for the next school year "Community Engagement" Fellow
program_
GLSS employee would like to undertake a driving discernment assessment in Beverly
MaryAnn reported on an incident of senior bullying that took place in the community_ She met
with the parties involved and issued a letter to the perpetrator regarding the "Standards of
Independence_"
Work Group is still working on Standards of Behavior and talking to MCOA and other partners
about the role of Senior Centers in serving special populations_
The High Risk Task Force continues to meet and is working towards a way of sharing
information regarding mutual clients_ Senior care is seeking a Tufts grant to hire a facilitator for
the group_
Focus Group is planned more information to follow_
Personnel Updates
Vacancy for a part-time custodian- interviews are underway still an open position_
Activities Coordinator vacancy - The position has been filled by Patti Rice, her start date is

Monday March 14_
The BCOA staff will be First Aid Certified by a trainer from the Fire department_
Drivers recently attended a Defensive Driving class in Gloucester_
Committee Reports
Awards Committee - no meeting
By- Laws Committee — no meeting
Scholarship Committee met before the Board meeting, Blair Smith
reported that five trips were approved for four individuals_ A device was
approved for three hundred dollars from" liftware" for a utensils that allows the user
to eat without assistance_
New Business
Senior Care has applied for a one hundred thousand dollar Grant, Mary Ann will keep the board
updated on this_
Next Meeting will be Tuesday April 5, 2016 2.30 pm
