1706-02-28[Selectmen's Meeting February 28, 1706] At a meeting of the Selectmen on the 28 of February 1705/6, was an order drawn upon Andrew Dodge, Constable of Beverly, to pay unto Lieut. Robert Briscoe 3 pounds and 5 shillings in money, out of the town rate now in said Dodge, his hands; and also at the same meeting was in order drawn upon John Ober, Constable of Beverly, to pay unto Lieut. Robert Briscoe 3 pounds and 30 shillings in money, out of the town rate now in said Ober, his hands. At a meeting of the Selectmen on the 28"' of February 1705/6, John Ober brought an accept of ten shillings due to him from the town, for cider and sugar for Joshua Turland's funeral; at the same time said Ober had an order drawn to pay himself the said ten shillings, out of the town rate now in his hands. At a meeting of the Selectmen on the 28 of February 1705/6, William Woodbury senr., upon application made by him unto the said Selectmen, concerning his being over rated in the several rates in Constable John Ober's hands, said Woodbury having been lately a prisoner with the French; and at the same time was an order drawn upon Constable John Ober, to pay said Woodbury sixteen shillings out of the town rate now in said Ober his hands. At the meeting of the Selectmen on the 28 of February 1705/6, then the five following orders were drawn upon Constable Andrew Dodge, to be paid out of the town rate now in said Dodge, his hands, viz.: to Capt. John Dodge for what was expended by him towards the building of Mrs. Blowers' pew in our meeting house, was an order drawn upon Andrew Dodge to pay said Capt. Dodge sixteen shillings; and to Jonathan Rayment for his disbursement towards the building the above said pew, was an order drawn upon said Constable Dodge to pay said Rayment ten shillings and four pence; and to Lieut. Robert Briscoe four was disbursed by him towards the building of said pew, was an order drawn upon said Constable Dodge to pay said Briscoe six shillings; to Jonathan Herrick for so much due to him by this book, for his service in helping to bring Mr. John Hale from Charlestown, was in order drawn upon said constable Dodge to pay said Herrick five shillings; and to Capt. Joseph Herrick for a man one day tending the mason, in mending the underpinning of our meeting house, was in order drawn upon Constable Andrew Dodge to pay said Capt. Herrick two shillings, six pence. At a meeting of the Selectmen of Beverly on 28th February 1705/6, the committee to provide a grammar school master for said town brought the following agreement viz. Articles of agreement made this 14th day of January 1705 between Capt. William Dodge, Capt. Joseph Herrick and Jonathan Rayment, they being a committee in behalf of the town of Beverly on the one part, and Mr. Jonathan Rogers on the other part, witnesseth, that the said Mr. John Rogers doth by these presents covenant to and with the said committee to keep a grammar and English school in said town of Beverly for the space of half one year from the date hereof that is to say to teach Latin and English, to write and to cipher and herein to deal faithfully by doing his utmost to teach and instruct all such scholars as he shall be concerned with or have under his care. In consideration hereof the said committee in behalf of said town of Beverly doth promise and engage that the said Mr. John Rogers shall be paid the sum of fifteen pounds.
