1704-06-02This indenture made this second day of June the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and four betwixt the selectmen of the town of Beverly in the County of Essex, in the province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, and John King junr. of the town of Salem, the county and province aforesaid witnesseth, that I, the said John King junr., do covenant and promise to and with the said Selectmen of Beverly, to take, keep and maintain my mother -in -law Dorcas Hoare, widow, being one of the poor of the town of Beverly, for the full term of three years from the twenty and fourth day of April last past and to find her meat, drink, lodging and apparel, suitable for such a person during the term of three years and to clear the town of her, if it should please God to continue her life so long, and we the Selectmen of Beverly do promise in behalf of our town, that the said John King shall be paid five pounds a year in money, out of the Town Treasury or some other way by said town of Beverly, yearly, during said term above - mentioned if it shall please God to continue her life so long or proportionally if she, the said widow Hoare, should die before the expiration of said term, abovesaid and said John King to be paid every half year fifty shillings, during said term and in case she, the said Dorcas Hoare, should be taken away by death within the above said term of three years, that, then said John King shall be paid forty shillings for her burial.
