1704-01-31[Selectmen's Meeting January 31, 1704]
At a meeting of the Selectmen the 31S of January 1703/4, Nathaniel Hayward brought an account of
seven shillings, due to him for building a pair of stocks, and for some timber he found for the stocks, and
at the same time was an order drawn upon Caleb Wallis, Constable, for the payment of the same.
At the same meeting of the Selectmen on the 31S of January 1703/4, was a bill drawn upon Constable
Jonathan Rayment to pay Mr. Jacob Griggs twenty six shillings.
At the same meeting of the Selectmen on the 31 st day of January 1703/4. Mr. Thomas Woodbury gave an
account of two day's work at taking a list of the estates which is five shillings and two days expended
with the Commissioner in proportioning the estates, three shillings, then reckoned with Mr. Thomas
Woodbury and due to said Woodbury, eight shillings and at the same time was a bill drawn upon Samuel
Corning, Constable for the payment of the same.
At a meeting of the Selectmen on the 31 st day of January 1703/4, then reckoned with Joseph Morgan junr.
For his services done as Sexton in the year 1703 and part of the year 1702, and there is due Joseph
Morgan 6 pounds and 17 shillings at the same time was a bill drawn upon Constable Jonathan Rayment to
pay Joseph Morgan junr. thirty seven shillings.
At a meeting of the Selectmen on the 31st day of January 1703/4, Caleb Wallis gave an account of
fourteen shillings paid unto Deacon John Hill, for keeping Joshua Turland and for his clerkship for the
year 1703, the whole due to said Wallis is fifty four shillings and at the same time was in order drawn
upon Constable Samuel Corning for the payment of the same.
January the 31S day 1703/4 the Selectmen on behalf of the town made the following agreement with
Joseph Morgan junr., the said Morgan doth by these presents promise to take care of our meeting house
and in all respects to perform the duty of a Sexton in our town for the term of one whole year from the
date above said, for which service the Selectmen on behalf of the town doth promise that the said Joseph
Morgan shall be paid the sum of five pounds, in current pay. In witness whereof we have set here unto our
hands the day and year above - mentioned. Joseph Morgan, Thomas Woodbury, John Trask senr., Jacob

At a meeting of the Selectmen on the 31st day of January 1703/4, was a bill drawn upon Constable
Jonathan Rayment pay unto Mr. James Hale eight pounds and also in order drawn upon Constable Samuel
Corning to pay Mr. James Hale seven pounds.
At a meeting of the Selectmen on the 31 st January 1703/4 was a town rate made, amounting in the whole
to 41 pounds 15 shillings 9 pence and committed to Jonathan Rayment and Samuel Corning, constables,
and warrant with each list. Constable Jonathan Rayment's part which he is to collect and pay into William
Dodge, Treasurer, amounting to 21 pounds 7 shillings 4 pence and the list committed to Samuel Corning
amounting to 20 pounds 8 shillings 5 pence and Constable Jonathan Rayment and Constable Samuel
Corning are by warrant required to pay to the Treasurer or Selectmen, or they are ordered to make up
accounts at, on, or before the last day of March ensuing from the date aforesaid.
The meeting of the Selectmen on the 31S of January 1703 /for Mr. James Hale brought the following
receipt viz. Know all men by these presents, that we, the subscribers being a committee for providing a
grammar school master for the town of Beverly have agreed with Mr. James Hale to teach youth of the
male sex the grammar and to perfect in reading English, writing and casting accounts viz. To teach said
school for the space of one year next ensuing the date hereof. We engage to said Hale thirty pounds in the
town's behalf for the said service viz. The salary voted by the town of Beverly on January 7th, 1702/3,
provided also the said Hale do subscribe his name to this writing or agreement in testimony of his
accepting our proposals and of his engagement to perform said service. With our hands the 11th day of

At the same meeting of the selectmen on the 31st day of January 1703/4, Mr. Richard Ober brought an
account of wood hauled to the watch house by himself and a glass for the watch and work done by Robert
Morgan about the watch house and by John Balch junr. for wood and nails for the watch and for work
done by Mr. Ober himself about the watch house, and then reckoned with Mr. Ober and due to him 1
pound 6 shillings 6 pence.
At the same time Mr. Richard Ober brought an account of twenty shillings paid unto Deacon Hill for
keeping Joshua Turland the whole sum due to Ober is 2 pounds 6 shillings 6 pence and at the same time
was a bill drawn upon Constable Samuel Corning for the payment of the same.
At the same meeting of the Selectmen on the 31st January 1703/4 Jacob Griggs brought an account of
eighteen shillings, paid to Deacon Hill for keeping Joshua Turland, and for taking an account of people's
estates and for two days expended with the commissioners in proportioning estates, ten shillings deducted
for expense, Mr. Briscoe then reckoned with Mr. Jacob Griggs and due him to said Griggs, twenty six
shillings.
