1698-04-05 (3)[Selectmen's Meeting April 5, 1698] At a meeting of the Selectmen on the 5"' of April 1698, agreed with Simon Lovett that for the year ensuing, he will supply the office of Sexton, in ringing the bell and sweeping the meeting house, and taking care of the same as belongeth a Sexton, for the which service the said Lovett is to be paid after the rate of five pounds and five shillings a year, and if said Simon Lovett shall leave said office before the expiration of the year, then he is to give the Selectmen timely notice thereof. This indenture and agreement made this 5th day of April 1698, which is as followeth viz: I, John Hill, of the town of Beverly do by these, promise and engage to and with the Selectmen of said town to take, keep and maintain Joshua Turland, one of the poor of said town, in meat, drink, washing, lodging and clothes fit for such a person, for the time of one full year from the date hereof, fully to be completed and ended, and to dismiss him as well in clothes as now he is, and the Selectmen of said town do by these presents, put the said Joshua Turland to the Deacon John Hill, him to serve for the term above said, and further, we the Selectmen of said town of Beverly, do by these presents and behalf of our said town promise to and with the said Deacon John Hill, that in consideration of the promises that he the said Deacon John Hill shall be paid the just and full sum of seven pounds in money, out of the town's treasury or some other way by said town, in witness here of we have hereunto set our hands, the day and year above written. At a meeting of the Selectmen the above said Samuel Morgan senr., having paid £1:13:042 Roger Haskell according to order, and the other £5:06:4 being discounted in part of pay for the said Morgan's keeping Joshua Turland one year, the said Morgan has now fully paid the debt of seven pounds above said.
