The meeting is called to order at 6:30 p.m.
1. Approval of wall and window (interior) sign for Subway at 45 Enon
Street
First on the agenda is discussion of signage for a new Subway restaurant at 45 Enon
Street. Mr. Daniel Fenderson explains that he hopes to open a new Subway in the
location of the former Quizno's at 45 Enon Street (commercial unit #9).
Board members review and discuss the application which seeks approval for two
signs for the above - referenced location /establishment:
• A wall sign which will measure twenty -two and one - eighth (22 1/8) inches
high, ninety six and three quarter (96 3 /4) inches long and five (5) inches in
depth. It will be a "typical" "Subway" sign consisting of individual
illuminated white and yellow channel letters on the existing sign band; and
• A window sign that would be installed in the interior of the restaurant (i.e.
not affixed to window itself) that will measure twenty -four (24) inches in
height, thirty -four (34) inches long and five (5) inches in depth. It will be a
"typical" "Subway" sign consisting of white and yellow letters.
Members ask for details on the interior "window" sign. Fenderson says that the sign
will be hung on the inside of the restaurant and not affixed to the window itself. It
will however be visible from the outside. Members ask for clarification on the
photos submitted with the application. Fenderson explains that the photo was
taken of another store to illustrate what the interior "window" sign would look like.
The temporary paper sign in the photo happened to be in the window of the store
when the picture was taken, and Fenderson clarifies that he is not looking for
approval of that type of signage and in fact prefers not to use it. Cassidy informs him
that the City does have restrictions on so- called window signs and they are limited

to 20% coverage of a window. She recommends consulting with the building
inspector when /if he decides to erect window signs in the future.
Finch asks if there are any other questions. There are none.
Flannery: motion to approve the two signs included in this application but not
including the temporary, paper window sign shown in the submitted
illustrative photo. Motion seconded by Matthews, all members in
favor. Motion carries 4 -0.
Cassidy explains that it will take a day or two to finalize the Board's decision letter
but it will be done by Tuesday of next week. Fenderson says he is hoping to open
the store on Wednesday and Cassidy recommends he speak with the building
inspector.
2. Approval of second sign on existing free - standing sign structure for
Sunkiss Tanning at 70 Herrick Street
Next on the agenda is a new sign for Sunkiss Tanning which hopes to locate at 70
Herrick Street. The sign would be placed on an existing free - standing sign structure,
underneath a sign already in place on the structure for an abutting business (LiShay
Hair Design). The proposed sign will measure twenty -four (24) inches high, sixty
(60) inches long and one - eighth (1/8) inch in depth.
Members review the proposed design (black background, two -tone pink lettering
with an orange sunburst, phone number in white text). Finch objects to the
inclusion of a phone number on the sign because of zoning regulations and the
applicant agrees to remove the telephone number. The applicant states that he
would like to adjust the size of the remaining text so that it is proportional to the
background and members have no objection to that.
Finch asks if the sign will be lighted and the applicant says that it is not presently lit
although he might like to do that in the future. Positioning of any light(s) is
important since they could impact traffic in the adjacent intersection. He asks if
"gooseneck" lighting would be appropriate and from an aesthethic viewpoint
members concur.
Cassidy asks if there are any other questions. There are none.
Cassidy: motion to approve the proposed sign for Sunkiss Tanning SUBJECT TO
THE CONDITION that the phone number be eliminated from the
proposed sign text. Motion seconded by Flannery, all members in
favor. The motion carries 4 -0.
