1697-05-28[Selectmen's Meeting May 28, 1697] At a meeting of the Selectmen on the 28th day of May, 1697, was a list of the town rate made, mounting to the sum of twenty seven pounds, fourteen shillings and nine pence to be paid in money, and committed to Constable William Cleaves for the collecting and paying, according to the following warrant, viz.: to Constable William Cleaves, you are required in his Majesty's name to collect and gather, of the several inhabitants within named their several proportions, as they are set, rated or assessed to the within list, rate or bill of assessment, the sum is twenty seven pounds fourteen shillings & nine pence to be paid in money, it being the proportion that you are to gather of a town rate, ordered to be made according to record on our town book, dated March 29th, 1697, the which twenty seven pounds, fourteen shillings and nine pence, you are forthwith to pay into the town treasurer, or otherwise as the Selectmen shall order for the use of the town and if any shall refuse or neglect to make payment of his or their respective sum or sums as they are grated or assessed to the within rate, list or bill of assessment, then you are to make distress for the sum according to law. At the same meeting of the Selectmen was also another list of a town rate made, amounting in the whole to the sum of twenty eight pounds, thirteen shillings & four pence to be paid in money, & committed to Constable Cornelius Larcom with warrant thereon, according to the term of the warrant next above written.
