1697-03-16[Town Meeting March 16, 1697] At a legal town meeting of the inhabitants of the town of Beverly, on the 16th day of March, 1696/7, Mr. Thomas West, Mr. Robert Bradford, Mr. Thomas Woodbury senr., Mr. Isaac Woodbury & Samuel Balch, were chosen Selectmen for the year ensuing; at the same meeting Samuel Balch was chosen Town Clerk for the year ensuing. At the same town meeting William Cleaves was chosen constable for Bass River ward, and Cornelius Larcom for Mackerel Cove ward for the year ensuing. At the same town meeting Lieut. Andrew Elliott, was chosen Town Treasurer for the year ensuing. At the same town meeting Samuel Herrick senr., John Lovett junr., William Conant and Thomas Sallows, were chosen tithing men for the year ensuing. At the same town meeting, Jonathan Biles and Joseph Trask were chosen fence viewers for the year ensuing. At the same town meeting John Tuck senr., Daniel Larcom, William Trask & William Dodge, son of Capt. John Dodge, were chosen surveyors of our town and country highways for the ensuing year. At the same town meeting, John Lovett senr. was chosen Clerk of the Market for the year ensuing. The same town meeting, William Elliott was chosen Sealer of Leather in said town for the year ensuing. At the same town meeting, John Giles & Matthew Butman were chosen haywards or field drivers, for the year ensuing. This indentment and agreement made this 17 of March 1696/7, between Sgt. Samuel Morgan senr. of the town of Beverly, in the County of Essex, in his Majestic's province of the Massachusetts Bay, in New England, cooper, on the one party, and Mr. Thomas West, Mr. Robert Bradford, Mr. Thomas Woodbury, Mr. Isaac Woodbury & Samuel Balch, Selectmen of the town of Beverly aforesaid, which are as followeth, viz.: that I, the above said Samuel Morgan, do by these presents for myself & my heirs, executors, administrators & assigns, bargain & engage to & with said Selectmen, to take, keep and maintain Joshua Turland, one of the poor of said town, and to him the said Turland to provide for & maintain in meat, drink, clothes, washing & lodging, and all necessaries fitting for an apprentice for the term of one full year, fully to be completed and ended from the date hereof, and said Selectmen do hereby put the said Joshua Turland, unto the said Samuel Morgan, him to serve for the term above said, and said Selectmen do in behalf of our town of Beverly, promise and engage to and with the said Samuel Morgan, that in consideration of the promises, he shall be paid the just and full sum of ten pounds money, in witness whereof we have interchangeably hereunto set our hands, the day and year above written.
