1696-06-06[Selectmen's Meeting June 6, 1696] At a meeting of the Selectmen on the 6th day of June, 1696 was a rate made amounting in the whole to £39:11:06 & being one list of Mr. Hale's rate, made for the payment of the one half of the said Mr. Hale's salary, for the year begun the first day of March, 1695/6, and said list committed to Constable John Balch, for the collecting and paying according to the following warrant. To Constable John Balch, you are in his Majesty's name required to collect of the several inhabitants within named, their several proportions as they are rated or assessed, to the within rate, list or bill of assessment, amounting in the whole to the sum of £39:11:06 to be paid in money, thirty two pounds thereof to be for the payment of the Reverend Mr. John Hale, minister of the gospel amongst us, for his salary, for the year begun the first day of March, 95/6, and will end the last day of February, 1696/7, the which £32:00:00 money for the said Mr. Hale's salary you are to deliver and pay into Deacon John Hill one of the Selectmen, that is to say £16: 00:00 to complete the sum of £32:00:00 to be paid at or before the first day of March next ensuing, and the remainder being £07:11:06 you are to pay into the Selectmen or their order for the use of the town, and if any person or persons shall refuse or neglect to pay their respective sum or sums, set them in the within list, rate or bill of assessments, then you are to make distress for the same according to law, and for your so doing, this shall be your warrant. Dated in Beverly June 6, 1696 Thomas West, John Hill, Robert Bradford, and Edward Dodge, Samuel Balch, Selectmen. At the same time was another list of a rate made for the payment of the other half of the above said Mr. Hale's salary, for the year begun the 1st day of March 1695/6, amounting in the whole to the sum of £32:16:00 and committed to Constable John Trask for the collecting of & paying, that is to say £32:00:00, thereof to the above said Mr. Hale, the remains being £04:06:002 pay to the Selectmen for the use of the town, with warrant thereupon written according to the warrant next above written.
