1696-03-09[Agreement March 9, 1696] This indentment & agreement made this ninth of March, Anno Domini 1695/6, between William Bath of the town of Beverly, in the County of Essex and his majestic's province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, yeoman, on the one part & John Hill, Robert Bradford, Thomas West, Edward Dodge and Samuel Balch, as they are selectmen of the town of Beverly aforesaid, on the other part, which are as followeth viz: that I, William Bath, above said, do by these presents promise & engage to and with said Selectmen, to keep & maintain Joshua Turland of said town now in the custody of said Bath, and him the said Turland to provide for in meat, drink, washing and lodging, suitable for such a person, for the term of one whole year ensuing from the first day of March current, and said Selectmen do hereby put the said Joshua Turland to this said Bath, him to serve after the manner of an apprentice for the term above said and the said Selectmen do in behalf of said town, promise to the said William Bath, that he shall be paid seven pounds in money, and a discharge of his part of the town rate, that shall be made for said Turland's maintenance, in witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands, the day and year above written.
