1692-11-29[Town Meeting November 29, 1692] At a general town meeting of the inhabitants of Beverly legally warned and met together on 29th November, 1692 it was then agreed to and voted by said inhabitants that there be a town rate made by the Selectmen of said town, amounting to £30, ten pounds in money & twenty pounds in current pay, to defray several debts due from said town. At the same time meeting it was also voted that all the wood and timber now fallen, and not cut up by the last... At a general town meeting of the inhabitants of Beverly, legally warned and met together on the 29 of November 1692 it was then voted that and Samuel Balch was chosen our town clerk for the year ensuing. At the same time meeting it was also agreed unto and voted, that there shall be no green wood nor timber on the upland, nor oak or walnut in the swamp and our town common, shall be cut and carried away from the date above said and so during the town's pleasure, or penalty of twenty shillings per tree, it is also voted that no green wood be cut ensuing on penalty abovesaid, but from first of January to first of February next ensuing, any inhabitant may cut birch, maple & ash and such like in swamps. At the same town meeting on a motion of Corporal Thomas Whittridge of the said town, for the benefit of setting a stone wall on some part of our town common land, for the fencing of some swamp land of his own, to the answer of which request, were chosen Capt. Paul Thorndike, Lieut. William Dodge, Sgt. Zachariah Herrick, as a committee to review the said land, & to sell and agree with the said Thomas Whittridge, as they shall see most convenient. At the same time meeting on a motion of John Stone, for the buying of a piece of common land of about an acre and a half & the exchanging of about three quarters of an acre or more, were chosen the above said Capt. Paul Thorndike, Lieut. William Dodge & Zachariah Herrick, also as a committee to agree with the said John Stone, either in or by selling or exchanging of the land above said or both, as they shall see mete. At a general town meeting legally warned & met together, on the 29 of November, 1692, on a motion of James Taylor to the town, for the buying of a small piece of common land of the town's, to the answer of which request was chosen a committee, Capt. Paul Thorndike, Lieut. William Dodge, Sgt. Zachariah Herrick, to review the said land and to agree with the said Taylor, as they shall see mete. At the same time meeting were chosen a committee to survey our town's common, for the prevention of the stealing of wood and timber on the same, Joseph Lovett, George Hall, Corp. Thomas Whittridge and Thomas Woodbury junr.
