1693-06-09[Selectmen's Meeting June 9, 1693] At a meeting of the Selectmen of Beverly on the 9 of June 1693. Then Reckoned with Freeborn Balch who was Constable for the year 1690, for all country rates committed to him at the time of his Constableship, & the town remains in the said Balch's debt on account of said rates, sum of thirteen shillings & eight pence in pay, & six shillings in money. At the same meeting of the said Selectman, then reckoned with the above said Freeborn Balch, on account of a rate made for Mr. Hale's salary bearing the date 17th of the 12th month 1690/1, and he the said Balch remains in the town's debt, the sum of £2:10:00 money, £01:08:00 whereof Mr. Hale allowed to town of his said salary. At a meeting of the selectmen on the 9 of June, 1693 was granted unto Mr. Nehemiah Grover, Lieut. John Balch & Thomas Gage, liberty to build up the back seat of the West gallery for the use of their sons, that is to say, the short back on the south end of said gallery.
