1693-02-27[Selectmen's Meeting February 27, 1693] At a meeting of the Selectmen on the 27th of February, 1693, Mr. Edmund Gale who was Constable for the year 1686, brought this discharge as followeth: to the Selectmen of Beverly, these may signify that in the year Edmund Gale has collected for my supply, which I take to begin November, `86, that I have received or accepted as received, thirty -five pounds which said Gale was to gather and hereby discharge you & him of the sum, witness my hand this 13th of February, 1693. John Hale. At the same meeting of the selectmen then reckoned with the above said Edmund Gale, for all country & town rates committed to him when he was Constable, and he, the said Edmund Gale, hath fully paid and discharged all the rates above said. This indemtment, bargain or agreement, made on the twenty seventh day of February in the year of our Lord 1693, between William Bath of our town of Beverly, in the County of Essex, in New England, of the one party and the selectmen of said town to wit, Deacon John Hill, Mr. Roger Haskins, Nehemiah Grover & Thomas Gage in behalf of said town, in the other party witnesseth, that said Bath doth hereby covenant, promise and engage to & with said Selectmen, to keep & maintain Joshua Turland, now in said Bath's custody in meat, drink, clothing, washing & lodging, & all things fitting for such a person for one whole year, said year beginning on the first day of March next ensuing & said Selectmen do hereby covenant, & promise in the behalf of the town, to pay unto said Bath in said year ten pounds, for and in consideration of said Bath's keeping of said Turland, & for the due performance of what is above written according to the true intent and meaning hereof, we above written & named, have hereunto interchangeably set to our hands, the day and year first above written. The X mark of William Bath signed in the presence of us Edmund Dale, Samuel Balch, John Hill, Roger Haskins, Nehemiah Grover, Thomas Gage February 27th, 1693. At a meeting of the selectmen then reckoned with Jonathan Biles, for the overplus of Mr. Hale's rate, committed to him the said Biles bearing date 12 January 1691 and the said Jonathan Biles remains in the town's debt, upon account of said rate, one pound fifteen shillings. At the same meeting of the selectmen, then reckoned with Freeborn Balch who was Constable for the year, 1690.
