1691-07-06[Selectmen July 6, 169 1] At a meeting of the selectmen on 16 July, 1691, at the house of Mr. Roger Haskins, said selectmen did then & there reckon with Robert Briscoe late Constable, for a certain rate committed unto said Briscoe's gathering, in the 26th day of March, 1691, amounting to six pounds, nineteen shillings & three pence and said Briscoe did then pay unto said selectmen, three pounds in silver money & two shillings, and in paper money or bills of credit three pounds & three shillings, which is in the whole five pounds & five shillings, for which payment said Briscoe was acquitted & discharged of said rate by said selectmen. At the same meeting of said selectmen Mr. Roger Haskins who was chosen Constable in & for our town of Beverly, on the 23rd day of June, 1691, & did refuse to serve in said office: for which refusal said Haskins did pay unto said selectmen five pounds, by discounting five pounds that was due unto said Haskins from our said town, which five pounds was expended by the preceding selectmen & said Haskins was then acquitted of said service and said office.
