1691-03-26[Selectmen March 26, 16911 26th of March, 169 1. At a meeting of the selectmen at the house of John Stone, Thomas Whittridge then did pay unto William Bath, for said Bath's keeping of Joshua Turland, five pounds, or at least said Bath did then accept of said Whittridge's payment, which five pounds was a debt due unto the town, from the estate of William Livermore now deceased. At the same meeting of the selectmen, John Coy sometime Constable, did pay unto William Bath for said Bath's keeping of Joshua Turland, or at least said Bath did accept of said Coy's payment of three pounds, which £3 was due unto the town, of a rate that was sometimes committed to said Coy's gathering. At the same town meeting the then selectmen were chosen & appointed, viz: Deacon John Hill, Lieut. Exercise Conant, Mr. Henry Herrick, Mr. Nehemiah Grover & Mr. Mark Haskell, the committee to proportion the inhabitants or families of our town of Beverly in three companies or squadrons, to use & act said work about our country and town highways, as in the last record in the other side in the bottom of the leafs. At the same meeting there was a question arose, whether the five pounds that the law imposed, as a fine upon constables being chosen & refuse to serve; were money yea or nay, & it was voted in the affirmative.
