Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: Councilor Slate Acceptance of Minutes: March 4, 2013 Public Speakers: Resolution: The Book Shop of Beverly Farms # 36 RESOLUTION The Book Shop of Beverly Farms WHEREAS: The Book Shop of Beverly Farms opened for business in 1968 and celebrates 45 years of independent bookselling; and WHEREAS: The Book Shop of Beverly Farms was founded by three women who visualized a setting where readers and writers could meet, share ideas, and buy books, and is currently co -owned by Pam Price of Beverly, Lee Simonds Brown of Manchester, and Janet Weedon of Salem; and WHEREAS: The Book Shop of Beverly Farms also set up a Children's Room on the 2nd floor of the Shop where generations of young readers have had their first experience of selecting and purchasing a book to be treasured and passed along to even younger readers as they began their lifelong love of reading; and WHEREAS: The Book Shop of Beverly Farms has always encouraged, promoted, and hosted local authors including John Updike, Henry Cabot Lodge, Ed Emberley, and Chris Van Allsburg who have held book - signings at the Shop, maintaining those local connections to the community; and WHEREAS: The Book Shop of Beverly Farms has also sponsored Book Fairs, discounts for teachers and their classrooms; and 3/20/2013 Regular Meeting Page 2 of 6 WHEREAS: The Book Shop of Beverly Farms owes its longevity and success to these various initiatives, and their willingness to adapt to social media, the internet online book selling, and the impact of e- readers, big -box retail bookstores, and the changing landscape of reading and readers in contemporary society; NOW THEREFORE, the Mayor and the City Council of the City of Beverly acknowledge, commend and celebrate the 45 anniversary of The Book Shop of Beverly Farms, wish them continued success and good fortune in their service to our best literary pursuits, and that the City Clerk will spread a copy of this Resolution upon the City Records Swearing In Ceremony — #37 - Permanent Reserve Police Officers Public Hearings: Order# 30 7:20 pm (Airport Enterprise Fund Transfer) Refer to Finance &Property Presentations, Awards and Memorials: Presentation - Carriage House -Mayor Scanlon - Denise Deschamps Communications from His Honor the Mayor: #38 March 18, 2013 Honorable City Council City Hall Beverly, MA 01915 Dear Honorable Council: I hereby reappoint, subject to your review and recommendation Ms. Toni Musante, 12 Willow Street, Beverly to serve on the Solid Waste Management Committee. These improvements will consist primarily of windows and doors in the West and South faces of the building to permit visitors to the Carriage House to enjoy the spectacular ocean views. Improvements in the lighting within the building will also be made and amodestly -sized area outside the building will be fenced off to allow building users some private outdoor space. $50,000 of the required sum has been donated by a private individual and his company. $25,000 is in hand from recently received mitigation funds. That leaves a balance of $100,000 to be made available from the existing Reserve for Unforeseen which today contains $218,061. I ask that you please set a public hearing on this matter at your earliest convenience. We wish to implement these improvements by the middle of May. Thank you. Very truly yours, William F.
