A regular meeting of the Beverly School Committee was held on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 in the Memorial
Building, Room 164, Beverly, MA.
Members Present: Annemarie Cesa, Maria Decker, Karen Fogarty, David Manzi, Kris Silverstein, and
Mayor Scanlon
Members not in Attendance: Paul Manzo
Also in Attendance: Dr. Marie Galinski, Superintendent of Schools; Dr. Maryellen Duffy, Assistant
Superintendent of Schools; Jean Sherburne, Director of Finance and Operations,
Donna Bergeron, Administrative Assistant to the School Committee,
Call to Order: Ms. Cesa called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
Pledge of Allegiance: Ms. Cesa led those assembled in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Approval of Meeting Records
A motion was made by Maria Decker to approve the minutes from the June 15, 2011 regular School
Committee meeting. The motion was seconded by Karen Fogarty and approved 6 -0.
Report from Student Representative to the School Committee
None
Communications from Committee Members
• Karen Fogarty reported a communication she received regarding high school student schedules.
• Maria Decker received communications regarding high school schedules, and administration of laptops
logistics.
• David Manzi reported receiving no response from his June 16, 2011 email to the City Council President
Cahill, and City Clerk expressing his discontent with the scheduling conflict of the August 24 posted
School Committee meeting and the City Council meeting.
• Kris Silverstein commented that administration and staff did a "fabulous job" during the BHS
registration and laptop distribution and inquired as to whether an on -line registration might be possible
in the future.
• Mayor Scanlon indicated that a turf field bid has been awarded and the project will begin in two to three

weeks.
Annemarie Cesa reported that a "BHS Homecoming Dance" has been scheduled for this fall and
received questions regarding school sports eligibility.
Report from the Superintendent
1. Budget Transfers - FYI
Director of Finance and Operations Jean Sherburne provided a summary of the end -of -year transfers for
the Fiscal Year 2011 (FYI 1) budget, which the administration recommended for approval. After some
discussion and questions a motion was made by Karen Fogarty to approve the end -of -year FYI transfers.
The motion was seconded by Kris Silverstein and approved by a vote of 6 -0.
2. Superintendent Goals for FY' 12
Dr. Galinski reported that she had included a draft copy of her goals for school committee approval. A
motion was made by Maria Decker to approve the Superintendent Goals. The motion was seconded by
David Manzi and approved by a vote of 6 -0.
3. Opening of School Enrollments
Dr. Galinski provided committee members with the latest enrollment numbers.
4. Staffing Update for FY' 12
Dr. Galinski provided a copy of the most recent staffing pattern, indicating that many of the newly hired
employees will replace recently retired teachers.
5. School Committee Calendar for Budget and Professional Development
Based on our recent discussion regarding a change in the school committee meeting format, Dr. Galinski
developed a draft calendar, which incorporates calendars for budget development as well as professional
development for the School Committee. After a brief discussion it was determined that there was a
conflict with the date of the Special Education Report /Audit Review meeting on Wednesday, September
21 St and it was suggested it should be moved to September 7 th 2011.
6. K -12 Insight Engagement Plan for 2011 -2012
Dr. Galinski provided a K -12 Insight Engagement Plan, which summarizes the schedule of surveys to be
administered during the 2011 -12 academic year.
7. Op Ed Article for the Newspaper
Dr. Galinski referenced an article that had been forwarded to the Salem News and Beverly Citizen for
publication. The article summarized the highlights of the recently implemented district Strategic Plan and
updated initiatives for the 2011 -12 academic year. Dr. Galinski indicated that the article is available on
the district website.
In response to the question regarding the ten year anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Dr. Galinski
reported that elementary school students will write letters of "thanks" to community first responders. The
letters, along with food donations, will be delivered by PTO members to police and fire stations on or
about 9/11/2011. Commemorative plans from middle and high school are in development.
8. BPS Community Update
Dr. Galinski reported that she and Maria Decker have finished a draft of a one -page community update
that will ultimately be distributed to all Beverly residents via a mailing with the water /sewer bills. The
cost of printing and distributing the update is currently under review.
9. Athletic Participation Numbers for 2010 -2011
Dr. Galinski referenced a report on current and historical athletic participation provided to the committee

Standing Committee on Finance and Facilities (Paul Manzo, Chairperson)
The Standing Committee on Finance and Facilities will meet on September 21, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Memorial
Building, Room 164.
Standing Committee on Curriculum, Instruction, and Student Life (Maria Decker, Chairperson
The Standing Committee on Curriculum, Instruction and Student Life meeting is scheduled for
Wednesday, September 7 th at 7:00 p.m.
Policy Review Subcommittee (David Manzi, Chairperson
No meetings have been scheduled.
Negotiations Subcommittee (Karen Fogarty, Chairperson)
Ms. Fogarty reported that the Negotiation Subcommittee met last Wednesday, August 17, 2011 and
reviewed policies which will be brought forward for a first reading.
New Business
The BHS Golf /Tennis /Auction fundraiser is scheduled for Monday, October 3 rd at the Beverly Golf and Tennis Club.

Kris Silverstein made a motion to adjourn. The motion was seconded by David Manzi and approved by a
vote of 6 -0. The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
