2009-01-27 City of Beverly, Massachusetts Public Meeting Minutes Board: Library Trustees Subcommittee: Date: Tuesday, January 27,2009 7:00P.M. Place: Beverly Public Library Board members present: Roseann Benson, Alyse Gause, Dennis Geller, John Kelley, Neil Olson, Kevin O'Reilly, and Joanne Panunzio Board members absent: Anthony Kline, Kathleen McMahon Others present: Patricia Cirone, Anna Langstaff, Todd Balf Recorder: Anna Langstaff Joanne Panunzio presided. Dennis Geller made the motion, seconded by Roseann Benson, to accept the minutes of December 16, 2008 as read. Motion passed. Public Presentation Library trustees thanked Todd Balf for his years of service on the board of trustees. Trustees presented Todd Balfwith a gift certificate and a framed photograph of the library. At 7:25PM library trustees recessed for a reception in honor of Todd Balf. At 7:35 meeting resumed. Committee Reports Personnel: No report. Administration: No report. Finance: No report. Long Range Planning: No report. Report of the Library Director 1) John Updike: John Updike passed away this morning. 2) Beverly Farms Landscaping Plan: Target Construction LLC was the lowest bidder. Start date has not been set. 3) Salem State College courses: The Library will sponsor two Salem State mini courses, Artists of 1898 and Current Events Discussion Group. 4) Community-Wide Reading Program: Events for Dark Tide have started, with more events coming in February and March. Planning has started for FY2010 community-wide reading program. 5) Upcoming Events: Legislative Breakfast Friday, March 6, 2009 8AM; Creating Young Martyrs presentation by author Alice LoCicero Wednesday, February 25, 2009 7PM; Pancake Breakfast Bookmobile fundraiser Sunday, March 29, 2009; Barnes and Noble Book Fair to benefit the bookmobile. 6) NMRLS: Patricia Cirone has been appointed to the NMRLS Delivery Committee. 7) New website: Anna Langstaff presented the new library website. 8) Building Issues: Patricia Cirone has been in contact with the Public Works Dept. regarding the large icicles that form above the Winter Street entrance. Problems continue with the HV AC. Bills for HV AC repairs continue to come out of the library budget. 9) Circulation Statistics: Library usage is up 10.7%. 10) Budget: Patricia Cirone discussed the implications of possible budget cuts in FY2009 and FY2010. Communications 1) Northeast Legislative Breakfast letter requesting money from the Friends of the Beverly Public Library. 2) Letter received from Kristin Murphy, American Library Association Government Relations Specialist, regarding the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008. Unfinished Business None New Business 1) Art donations: The Guild of Beverly Artists would like to donate works of art to the Beverly Public Library and the Beverly Farms Library. Library trustees reviewed the Policy for the Acceptance of Donations of Non-Monetary Gifts. Alyse Gause and Joanne Panunzio will write a letter to the Guild of Beverly Artists explaining our policy. The next regular meeting of the Board will be Tuesday, February 24,2009 at 7:00PM at the Main Library. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9: 15PM.
