WAR MEMORIAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING
APRIL 6, 2006
MEMORIAL ADMINISTRATION BUILDING
9:00 AM
Attendees:
Jake Petronzio
Doug Henderson
Russ Hadley
George Casey
Jerry Guilebbe
Jake Petronzio called the meeting to order, question on the GAR Hall was
asked by Russ Hadley. Jerry Guilebbe gave a full report on his meeting first
with the Mayor and then with Doctor Jim Hayes. Jerry explained that we
were given 3 small storage areas on the lower level of Memorial; also we
can conduct our meetings in the room on the main floor across from the
Office. This was the best situation at this time, and that we should make
plans to start moving out of the GAR Hall as soon as the area is cleaned out
and secured for us. We also discussed that when the new High School is
built that we see about getting a room some where in the School, this would
be a long term solution for us.
George Casey asked about the situation with Major Flores and the School,
their seems to be some friction between the ROTC program and some of the
school administrators at Beverly High, Jake made a motion that we discuss
this with all the Veterans Organizations and the Major when he returns from
his Washington DC trip. The group as a whole wants to back Major Flores
and his ROTC program. It seems that their has always been a lack of support
at the High School for the ROTC, and do not know why, but we will try and
defuse the situation once we meet with all those concerned.
Jerry Guilebbe spoke on the benches at Veterans Memorials at Odell Park,
the North Shore Vocational School can remove all the old wood and rebuild
the benches with a non wood product that will look good and last forever, all
the 5 benches for a total of $1200.00. So far we have commitments for
$900.00 but decided to go ahead with the project so it can be completed for
Memorial Day and before the students get out of school, we will get the
additional money some how.
Doug Henderson also spoke about Veterans Memorials at Odell Park and
wanted to know about the fixing of the walk to make it handicap accessible,
Jerry explained to the group that once the City takes care of the curb cuts on
Rantoul Street they will also take care of Veterans Memorials at Odell park.
This has always been a must, and it looks like it will get done finally.
Also under old business, Memorial Day was discussed and things look like
they are in place, the Herman A. Spear Post 331 American Legion is the host
post with Jerry Guilebbe, Veterans Director coordinating the details, letter of
invites, bands, national guard and invitees. This year’s theme is Iraq
Veterans, with Nick Petronzio and Mark Ray as invited aids to the chief
marshal and guest speakers, Jerry will see that invitations are sent to each.
With no further business a motion was made to adjourn the meeting, it was
accepted and seconded. Meeting was adjourned at 10:15am.
th
Next regular meeting will be May 4, 2006 at Memorial Administration
