2003-04-15 CITY OF BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS PUBLIC MEETING MINUTES Board: Beverly Beautification Committee Date: April 15, 2003 Place: Committee Room, City Hall, 191 Cabot Street Board Members Present: Alice Lombardi, Rod Shropshire, Ellen Todd Absent Members: Rosalie Kerr, Jo Lennox, Lisa McFadden, Susan Mueller, Nancy Ormiston, Elda Turner Others Present: Planning Director, Debra Hurlburt, Elaine Gunnoe, Chamber of Commerce, for Susan Mueller 1. Update on City Hall improvement interior Hurlburt reported that the city has a contractor currently painting the back staircase hallway. Hurlburt reported the results of her consultation with Phil Lowe of New England Furniture Institute regarding cleaning, repairing wood paneling and furniture in the Council Chambers. He suggested that the job could be done inexpensively by volunteers using wood soap and a very delicate scouring pad for cleaning. Hurlburt reported the recommendations of an interior decorator, whose services were donated by Waters and Brown, as to appropriate color schemes, window treatments and lighting fixtures for Council Chambers and Committee Room. Color samples were shown to the committee. Removal of the paneling in the committee room will depend on testing for possible asbestos. Hurlburt suggested that improvements to Council Chambers should be the focus of Community Pride Day on May 31. Hurlburt requested that committee members seek volunteers and donations for Community Pride Day. Shropshire has contacted, Mike White, a painter and offered to contact Calico Corners, Dawsons, Town Paint and Supply and other businesses. Shropshire suggested publicizing the need for volunteers and donations through the local media. Hurlburt will contact the Salem News and the Beverly Citizen. 2. Update on City Hall exterior improvements and landscape. Hurlburt reported consulting Bill Finch of the Historical Society, Tom Scully, Library Director and Ron Costa, Ward Councilor. Historical photos of city hall were distributed to the committee. The committee agreed that a complete landscape plan and presentation should be prepared to submit to the City Council. Todd and Shropshire will coordinate the project. The committee has received a letter of support from Mary DiVincenzo, President of the Friendly Garden Club of Beverly. Chief Electrical Inspector, William Ambrefe reported talks with the power company re installing period style poles around city hall. 4. Approval of Minutes Lombardi moved and Shropshire seconded the motion to accept the minutes of the meetings of : a. November 12, 2002 b. December 9, 2002 c. January 14, 2003 d. February 11, 2003 e. March 18, 2003 Lombardi requested that the sign design and participant agreement for traffic islands be attached to the minutes. The minutes were unanimously approved. 5. Other business Follow up on new framing for council photographs at next meeting. The next meeting of the Committee will be held on May 2003 at 3:00 p.m. in the Committee Room at City Hall.
