RE: SEMI-ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE OPEN SPACE AND RECREATION
COMMIITEE
Dear Members of the Council:
As required by the Ordinance that established the Open Space and Recreation
Committee, this letter serves as the Committee's semi-annual report to the City Council
The Committee meets monthly and continues to make progress on several fronts. In
summary, the Committee's efforts over the last six (6) morahs have included:
· A review and analysis of all open space lands identified during the mapping
and inventory process completed earlier.
· Prioritization of those properties found to be most critical to developing a
comprehensive open space program
· Research and review of thc draft Open Space and Recreation Report.
· A review of the final report of the Norwood Pond Commission.
· The continuation of subcommittee work including trails, regional issues,
public participation and master planning.
· Negotiations with private property owners near Sally Milligan Park to discuss
possible City acquisition.
· A review of the funding potential created by the Community Preservation
Act.
· Attendance (by regional subcommittee) at another North Shore regional open
space conference.
The work immediately ahead for the committee includes the following:

· Completion of the public participation process associated with drafting the
City's Open Space and Recreation Plan and submission of the plan to the
Commonwealth.
· Contacting private open space property owners and institutional landowners
regarding benefits of preserving open space.
· Working with the Master Plan Steering Committee and other boards on the
master plan.
· Holding a planning session for citizens to develop specific ideas for open
· Conductingj a joint meeting with the Parks and Recreation Commission to
assess how to proceed with utilization of the Norwood Pond area.
