1677-04-02At a General town meeting the 2 of April 1677 it was agreed that the selectmen shall proceed
to procure the committee appointed by the General Court to settle bounds between Salem & us.
A true record of agreement that was made between Salem & Wenham 29 of 1 mo. 1667
concerning the bounds eastward from the Great Pond between their towns & they did determine that
the brook which comes out of the Great Pond shall be the bounds between the towns aforesaid until
it meets with that brook that comes from Longham & so taking that brook for the bounds to the
eastward side of Richard Dodge’s farm: leaving out the meadow to Salem and excepting them from
all rates, dues & demands to Wenham & from thence by the edge of the meadow called Longham
Meadow to the upper end of the meadow at Turnup Swamp to the east end of the Pond & our
neighbors who have meadow in Longham butting upon our Common shall have liberty to cut trees
to fence their meadow & shall have free liberty for carting.
This is to signify that according to the agreement and appointment of Wenham with Beverly
that John Dodge sr., William Rayment & Peter Woodberry being the men chosen by the Selectmen
of Beverly to meet Wenham men to settle the bounds between the above said towns at Turnup
th
Swamp did accordingly go the 29 March 1677 & meet Wenham men upon the place & they did
jointly agree & settle bounds by free consent on both parties at the west end of Turnup Swamp next
the meadow they marked for the bounds a crooked maple that stood a little into the swamp & at the
east end of the swamp next the Pond they marked a three spanged maple that stood close upon the
north side of the brook that goeth into the Pond & so to run upon a straight line betwixt bound and
bound & according to this range or straight line.
