1675-10-22[October 22, 1675] It is agreed at a public town meeting in the two & twenty day of October that they should have forthwith a fort built about the meeting house & one at Bass River & one at Mackerel Cove & another at John Dodge’s senior, these to be carried on by a rate & this rate to be paid forthwith in work as they shall be warned. It is also agreed by the town that William Dodge sen., Lieutenant Dixsy, Paul Thorndike, John Patch, Andrew Elliott, Nehemiah Hayward are to be overseers to see to the ordering and carrying on of the work of fortification & these aforesaid men are to look to everyman’s labor & to appoint them wages as they shall reserve by their diligence in labor appointing to non about two shillings except their charge require more.
