1671-05-29[May 29, 1671] th At a town meeting the 29 of May 1671. It is agreed & voted unto that these men formerly deputed William Hill to assist Mr. Hubbard in getting in his debts that are due to him upon the delinquents if he accept it; otherwise to answer his suit in law. Secondly, the town shall bear them out that are defendants in the town’s behalf until it be effected. th At the said meeting 29 May ‘71 it is agreed & voted unto that the rate made formerly to pay Wm. Dodge sen. Shall be gathered in by those deputed & that which is wanting to be made up in the next rate to pay said William Dodge fully. Also, it is ordered that Thomas Pickton shall view the fences belonging to Mr. Hale’s old pasture & to give notice to the deficients to make their fences sufficient forthwith otherwise to proceed according to law against them. Samuel Corning sen. For and in consideration of a parcel of land lying near the meeting house in Beverly & for a highway lying on the backside of the 20 acres of land which he bought of Osmund Trask which was Jonathan Porter’s is granted a parcel of land lying between the meadow of Captain Lathrop & the farm of said Samuel Corning be it more or less. Whereas it is ordered by the town that Wm. Dodge jun. John West, John Patch & John Rayment being deputed to lay out and to compound with the proprietors of highways have agreed with Richard Brackenbury in consideration of a country highway lying between Manchester & Salem ferry through his land have given unto him these pieces of land viz. 3 acres of land lying within his own land & 2 acres lying northwest adjoining to his own land. th At a town meeting the 29 of May 1671 it was agreed that if any man or men will undertake the building of a gallery on the east side in the meeting house they should have liberty to build and are to be paid for the charge they are at by those that shall have liberty by the town to sit on this said gallery. Secondly, Humphrey Woodberry, John West and John Rayment having undertake this work they are to have each of them a seat in the foreseat by appointment of the selectmen for their trouble and such as sit in this gallery are to pay for a foreseat 10S. for a second 5S. & for a third 2S. And the overplus, the charge being paid, is to be kept for the use of the town. It is likewise ordered that none shall sit in this gallery before they have paid or agreed for their seats.
