1848-11-13 ElectionEssex, ss. To one of the Constables of the Town of Beverly - Greeting - You are hereby required in the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to notify and warn the qualified voters of the town of Beverly aforesaid, (by posting notices according to Town Regulations,) to meet at the Town Hall on Monday the thirteenth day of November current at nine o’clock before noon for the following purposes - viz.: - To see if the Town will send one or more Representatives to the next General Court, and if they so decide, to give in their ballots for the same - Also, To give in their ballots for a Governor and Lieutenant Governor of this Commonwealth, and for Senators for this District, for the ensuing political year, - and also for a Representative in the next Congress of the United States from District Number Two - The ballots will be received on one piece of paper; and the poll will open immediately after deciding upon sending Representatives, and close at four o’clock P.M. Hereof fail not, but make due return of this warrant with your doings thereon, before said time- Given under our hands and seal this fourth day of November in the year Eighteen hundred and forty-eight - Wm. Woodberry, Constable of Beverly - A true record of warrant & return - Attest, John I. Baker, Town Clerk - At the legal meeting of the qualified voters of the town of Beverly held pursuant to the preceding warrant, on Monday the thirteenth day of November in the year Eighteen hundred and forty-eight at nine o’clock before noon - Voted, To close the poll for all the officers named in said warrant at four o’clock afternoon - Voted, To send two Representatives to the next General Court, and proceeded to ballot for the same with the following result - the ballots having been sorted and counted, the whole number was ascertained to be nine hundred and thirty-two - necessary for a choice four hundred and sixty-seven - and said ballots were for the following persons - William H. Lovett, four hundred and eighty-six votes Paul Hildreth, four hundred and seventy-four votes Haskett D. Whitney, to hundred and forty-four votes Joseph E. Ober, two hundred and thirty-nine votes Ezra Batchelder, two hundred and nine votes - John Porter, two hundred and four votes - William A. Foster, one vote - John Tuck, one vote - And William H. Baker, Town Clerk At legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the town of Beverly in the County of Essex, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, qualified by the Constitution to vote for Governor and Lieutenant Governor, holden on the thirteenth day of November, being the second Monday of said month, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-eight, for the purpose of giving in their votes for Governor and Lieutenant Governor of said Commonwealth, the whole number of persons who gave in their votes was ascertained, as is directed in the Revised Statutes, (Chap. 4, Sec. 13,) by counting the whole number of separate ballots given in; and the whole number of ballots was nine hundred and twenty-three, And the whole number of votes given in for Governor was sorted, counted and recorded, and declaration thereof made as by the Constitution is directed; and said votes were for the following persons; viz.: - For Governor George N. Briggs of Pittsfield, four hundred and seventy-five votes - Caleb Cushing of Newburyport, one hundred and ninety-two votes Stephen C. Phillips of Salem, two hundred and fifty-eight votes Wm. H.
