1782-04-01At a legal meeting of the male persons of twenty one years of age belonging to the Town of Beverly that were qualified agreeable to the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to vote for a Governor, Lieut. Governor and persons for Senators and Councillors on Monday the first day of April 1782. The Selectmen presided at said meeting and the votes received for Governor, Lieut. Governor and persons for Senators and Councillors are as followeth viz. Governor For His Honor Thomas Cushing Esq.27 Votes received for Senators and Councillors For Hon. Azor Orne Esq.23 For Hon. Samuel Holten Esq.22 For Hon. Samuel Phillips Esq.23 For Hon. Stephen Choate Esq.2 For Hon. Jonathan Greenleaf Esq.27 For Hon. Aaron Wood Esq.23 For Hon. Larkin Thorndike Esq. was chosen Moderator of said meeting. d Voted. That William Woodbury 3 be excused from serving as Constable, Joseph Lovett was chosen d to serve as Constable in the Farm Ward by reason of William Woodberry 3 refusing to serve. nd Andrew Eliot was chosen to serve as Constable in the room of William Trask 2 refusing to serve and it going for said Trask’s term. Andrew Cleaves chosen surveyor of Highways in No. 7 in the room of William Butman, refusing to serve. Joseph Baker was chosen Tything man. Capt. Asa Leech and Nathaniel Greenwood was chosen Clerks of the Market, those chosen refusing to serve. Thomas Foster was chosen Sealer of Leather in the room of Daniel Foster refusing to serve. Nicolas Newbury was chosen Pound Keeper in the room of Osmon Trask refusing to serve. Robert Haskell was chosen to serve Constable in the Ferry District in the room of Israel Thorndike refusing to serve. Voted. That the Selectmen be directed to take care of the powder house and make such regulations relative to said house and improving the same as they shall think most for the benefit of the Town. Voted. That Mr. Nathan Dane be their agent to prosecute to final issue in the law for the fine all persons that have or shall refuse to serve into the several offices whereinto they have or shall be chosen to serve for this Town the current year.
