1782-02-05th At a legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly on Tuesday Feby. 5 1782. Col. Larkin Thorndike was chosen Moderator. Voted. That the report of their Committee appointed to petition to the General Court to have part of their Commonwealth Tax last sent for from this Town be taken off or abated, be accepted and ordered to be layed on file in the Clerk’s Office. Voted. That their said Committee further proceed to make application to the General Court praying to be heard on the floor relative to the matter contained in their petition. Voted. That Josiah Batchelder Esq. be added to the above said Committee. Voted. That the Town will indemnify their Assessors from all fines, executions, charges and damages of all kinds whatsoever that they shall sustain or pay for not making the Last Commonwealth Tax sent for from this Town as directed in the Tax Act requiring the same. th Voted. That the Town Meeting be adjourned to the 18 day instant at 3 o’clock afternoon. th At a legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly on adjournment on the 18 of February 1782. th The meeting was further adjourned to Monday the 25 day of Feby. instant at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. th At a legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly for Feby. 25 1782. William Dodge was chosen to th serve as Moderator in his room and then the meeting was further adjourned to Tuesday the 5 day of March next at 3 o’clock afternoon. th At a legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly March 5 1782 being on adjournment. th The Town Meeting was further adjourned to the 11 day of March instant at 4 o’clock afternoon. th At a legal meeting of the inhabitants of the Town of Beverly March 11 being on adjournment, the th meeting was further adjourned to Friday the 15 instant at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. At a legal meeting of the Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly on Monday the th 11 day of March 1782. Josiah Batchelder Esq. was chosen Moderator of said meeting. Voted. That the Town Meeting be adjourned to two o’clock in the afternoon and the Moderator adjourned the meeting accordingly. Town Meeting according to adjournment proceeded to business as followeth. Voted. That the[y] will proceed in the same day and manner in choosing their Selectmen and th Assessors as they did in their last annual March meeting on the 12 of March 1781 which was as followeth viz.. That each district shall have the nomination of their Selectman & Assessor by each district’s repairing by itself and their agreeing upon some person to be by them nominated and the Town to choose, if they see cause. Voted that all of Town officers be chosen by hand vote. Then each district repaired by themselves and agreed upon some person for their Selectman and Assessor and was by them nominated for that purpose. And the several persons hereafter named where chosen to serve in the several respective offices annexed to each of their names for the year ensuing. Capt. That the swine should go at-large the year ensuing being yoked and ringed as the law directs. Voted. That the sum of £ 200 be raised on the polls and estates within said Town for the purposes of repairing their Highways the ensuing year. Voted. That the present Selectmen, together with Josiah Batchelder Esq., be a Committee to draw some regulations relative to the highway and the method of repairing the same and report on the adjournment of this meeting. It was put to vote to see if the Town will enlarge the premium of the Constables for the collecting of taxes and it passed in the negative. Voted. That the Selectmen and Josiah Batchelder Esq. be a Committee to take under consideration that clause in the Warrant relative to the making good to the Constables the counterfeit money they have or shall receive for taxes and make report on the adjournment of this meeting. th Voted. That the Town Meeting be adjourned to Friday the 15 day of March instant and the Moderator adjourned the meeting accordingly to two o’clock in the afternoon. th At a legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly on the 15 day of March 1782 being on th adjournment from the 11 instant. The votes for a County Treasurer were brought in and proceeded with as the law directs. Richard Obear Jr. was excused from serving as a Constable the ensuing year. James Patch was chosen to serve as Constable in Bald Hill ward the ensuing year. It was put to vote to see if the Town would accept the report of their Committee appointed to bring in some regulations for repairing the Highways and it passed in the negative. th Voted. That the sum of £ 150 granted on a meeting of the Town on the 11 instant for the purposes of repairing of the Highways the current year be reconsidered. Voted. That some of £ 200 be assessed and raised on the polls and estates belonging to this Town for the purposes of repairing the Highways the ensuing year. Voted. That the method and regulations for repairing the Highways the ensuing year be the same as hath been practiced in this Town for a number of years past excepting the following alteration. Voted. That the several Surveyors work out their highway tax in repairing the highway on or before the first day of September annually. Voted. That 6/ be allowed [illegible] doing a day’s work per day and a team of 4 good cattle and teamer doing a day’s work 18/ per day and all other labor in that proportion on the highway the ensuing year. Voted. With regard to making good to the Constables the counterfeit money they have or may receive for taxes be referred to some future time. Their committee appointed to petition to the General Court to have part of their taxes taken off made report as on file and was accepted. Mr. William Standley and Mr. Lot Conant was chosen to serve on the Grand Jury for the Court of the General Sessions of the Peace to be holden at Ipswich on the first Tuesday of April next and at the several Courts of the General Sessions of the Peace to be holden respectively within the County of Essex for one year.
