1781-07-13th At a Legal Meeting of the Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly July 131781 being on adjournment Josiah Batchelder Esq. the Moderator of said Meeting being absent Capt. Asa Leech was chosen Moderator in his room. Voted. That the sum of £ 500 hard money be assessed and raised on the polls and estates within said Town for the purposes of procuring of beef and clothing sent for from the Town by government for the use of the Army agreeable to the Resolves of the General Court of June nd 22 1781. Said monies to be paid into the Treasurer in hard money or equivalent thereto at the time of payment and that the said money be assessed with the monies granted by the th Town on the 18 of May last for the paying of the Town’s debts and defraying charges etc. etc. Voted. That Capt. James Lovett, their Town Treasurer, be and hereby is empowered in the name and behalf of this Town as their agent to procure & pay for the beef sent for from this Town nd agreeable to the resolve of the General Court of the 22 June last. th At a Legal Meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly July 13 1781 Capt. Asa Leech was chosen Moderator of said Meeting. Voted. That the Town Meeting be adjourned to Tuesday the 7th day of August next at 4 o’clock in the afternoon and the meeting was adjourned accordingly. th At a legal Meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly August 7 1781 being on adjournment. Voted. That the several Constables be directed immediately to destrain on all such persons as neglect and refuse paying their taxes that now due on demand made for the same that the Treasurer may have money to answer all demands on him etc. Mr. Nathan Dane and Josiah Batchelder Esq. was appointed a committee to examine the Resolves and Laws of the Commonwealth and give in to the Town their opinion whether it is legal for to raise money to be paid in hard money only to defray Town charges and pay the Town’s debts and procure beef etc. Meeting dissolved.
