1781-05-14At a Legal Meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly qualified agreeable to the

Constitution on Monday the 14 day of May 1781. The Selectmen decided at the said meeting.
Voted to choose one Representative Capt. George Cabot, Josiah Batchelder Esq. and Larkin
Thorndike Esq. were elected successively to represent this town in the General Court
appointed to be held at Boston on the last Wednesday of May instant etc. etc. who declared
in the meeting their non-acceptance of said trust.

Voted. That the Town Meeting be adjourned to Friday next being the 18 day of May instant at 3
o’clock afternoon and the meeting was accordingly adjourned.

At a legal Meeting of the Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly May 14 1781
Col. Larkin Thorndike was chosen Moderator.

Voted. That the Town Meeting be adjourned to Friday the 18 of May instant at 4 o’clock in the
afternoon and the meeting was adjourned accordingly.

Capt. Benjamin Lovett Jr., Capt. Edmund Giles and Mr. William Green were appointed as the law

directs to serve on the Jury at the Maritime Court to be holden at Salem on the 22 instant. And
Capt. William Bartlett was chosen to serve on the Grand Jury at the Superior Court of Judicature and
Court of Assize and General Goal Delivery to be held in the County of Essex at Ipswich on the third
Tuesday of June next and Dea. Benjamin Cleaves and John Batchelder were chosen as the law directs
to serve on the Petit Jury at the said Court.
At a Legal Meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly that were qualified according

to law to vote in the Choice of Representatives to the Great and General Court on the 18 day of
May 1781 being on adjournment the Selectmen presided at said meeting. Joseph Wood was elected
to Represent them at the General Court the current year who declared his refusal to serve in said
trust.
The Town then proceeded and elected Jonathan Conant Esq. to represent them in the General Court
appointed to be convened and held for the government service at the State House in Boston or such
other place as may hereafter be appointed for the General Court to convene at agreeable to the
Constitution upon the last Wednesday of May instant.

At a Legal Meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly on the 18 of May 1781 being
on adjournment.
Larkin Thorndike Esq. the former moderator being absent and out of town, the Town made choice
of Josiah Batchelder Esq. to be Moderator of said meeting in his room.
Voted. That there be assessed and raised on the polls and estates of this Town the sum of one
thousand pounds in hard Monday computed in silver at six shillings and eight pence per ounce
to be collected and paid in hard Monday as above said or in other currency at the value
thereof at the legal exchange at the time of paying the same £ 750 of said sum for the paying
of the Town debts and £ 250 for the defraying the necessary charges arising within this town.
Voted. That the Assessors of this Town be directed to assess on those delinquent classes or
individuals of any class that shall not procure a man or men assigned them or neglect paying
their proper portion of procuring a man or men to go into the Continental Army agreeable to
the Resolves of the General Court of December last and others to assess the additional sum
of the value of one half over and above their proportion of charge of hiring and procuring of
said men provided said men should not be procured by said classes on monies paid by the said

individual by the 15 of June next.
Voted that Benjamin Pickett petition be dismissed. Meeting dissolved.
