At a Legal Meeting of the Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly June 12 1780.
Benjamin Jones Esq. chosen Moderator.
Lieut. Samuel Cole was chosen one of the Committee appointed as a Standing Committee for
procuring the complement of militia that are sent for from time to time in the room of Capt. Joseph
Rae, refusing to serve.
Voted. The Col. Henry Herrick, Town Treasurer, be empowered in the name in behalf of this town
to hire on interest the sum of six thousand pounds for the purposes of the procuring the men
sent for from this Town to reinforce the Continental Army etc.
Voted. That the Selectmen be directed in the name and behalf of this Town to petition to the Great
and General Court that some part of the militia sent for from this town be relinquished on
account of our great loss of men by sea the year past and that Col. Thorndike, their present
Representative, be directed to present the same to the Great and General Court.

Town meeting was then adjourned to Thursday the 15 instant at four o’clock afternoon.

At a Legal Meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly on adjournment June 15 1780.
Voted. That the Town will give to every man as a bounty that shall enlist into public service for this
Town agreeable to the resolve of the General Court of the5th of June last, at his passing
muster, one hundred weight of sugar, one hundred weight of coffee, 10 bushels corn, one
hundred weight of beef and fifty weight of cotton or £ 1370 in money.
Voted. That Capt. Nathan Leech, Capt. Caleb Dodge & Mr. Benjamin Smith be a Committee to
assist Col. Henry Herrick in hiring money and procuring of the above said articles for the men
that shall engage for this Town to go into the Army agreeable to the results of Court of 5th
June last.

Town meeting was further adjourned to the Tuesday the 20 day of June instant at 3 o’clock
afternoon.

The bounties voted on the 15 instant for procuring the militia sent for from this Town proving
ineffectual, the Town then voted the following bounty:

Or current money sufficient to procure them and 12/ per mile in addition to the six shillings given by
Court to be paid in current money, to be paid on their passing muster.
Voted. That the Committee appointed to procure the militia sent for from this Town shall have full
power to procure said men in the best manner they can, at their discretion.
Voted. The Capt. Nathan Leech, Capt. William Bartlett, Mr. Henry Larcom, Capt. Simeon Brown
and Capt. John Stacey be added to the Committee for the procuring the militia sent for from
this Town etc.
Voted. That the sum of fifty thousand pounds be assessed and raised on the polls and estates within
this Town immediately for the purposes of procuring of the militia sent for from this Town
to reinforce Continental Army etc..
Voted. That the twelve thousand pounds raised or granted to be raised and assessed on the polls and
estates within said Town for paying the Town’s debts and defraying the growing charges

arising within the same on the 30 of May last shall be assessed with the above said fifty
thousand pounds.
