1779-06-23rd At a Legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly June 23 1779. Col. Larcom Thorndike was chosen Moderator. Voted that all the men that are sent for from this Town to reinforce the Continental Army and to go to Rhode Island and Boston etc. should be hired at the cost and charge of the town etc.. Voted that the three captains of the companies of militia of this Town with the assistance of their subaltern officers be a Committee to hire and procure all the men that are now sent for from this Town in the best and cheapest manner they can. Voted that Benj. Jones Esq., Capt. Joshua Cleaves & Lieut. Joshua Dodge be a committee to assistance Selectmen in procuring a house to remove Captain Blackly’s family to which are sick with the small pox etc.. th Town meeting was adjourned to Tuesday the 29 day of June next at 5 o’clock afternoon. th At a Legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly June 29 1779 on adjournment. Voted that Col. Henry Herrick, Town Treasurer, be and hereby is empowered in the name and behalf of the town to hire a sum of money not exceeding twelve thousand pounds for the purposes of hiring a in procuring of the men that are sent for from this Town for to fill up the Continental Army to go to Rhode Island and Boston. Voted that Col. Larcom Thorndike should assist Col. Herrick in the procuring of the above said money. Voted that some of four thousand pounds be assessed and raised on the polls and estates of said Town as soon as may be. In addition to what was granted in May last to defray the charges of the war etc. nd Mr. Nathaniel Greenwood, Capt. , Joseph Raymond, William Trask 2 & Peter Homan were chosen a committee to remove Captain William Blakely’s said family that have got the small pox to Mr. Cole’s house tomorrow morning. Mr. Silas Walden, Mr. Nehemiah Smith, Mr. Joshua Ellinwood and Capt. Richard Quarterman was chosen to serve on the Petit Jury at the Court of the General Sessions of the Peace and Inferior Court of Common Pleas to be holden at Salem on the second Tuesday of July next.
