At a legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly March 81779.
Henry Herrick Esq. was chosen Moderator.
Voted. That they would proceed in the same way and manner in their choice of Town officers as
they did at their annual meeting the last year on the 9th of March 1778 which is as followeth.
Viz.
Then each district shall have the nomination of their Selectmen and Assessors by each district
repairing by itself and their agreeing upon some person to by them nominated and the Town
to choose them if they so cause.
Town Meeting adjourned till half after one in the afternoon.
Voted. That all the Town Officers shall be chosen by hand vote.
And each district nominated their Selectmen and Assessors accordingly.
And the several persons hereafter named were chosen to serve in the several respective offices
annexed to each of their names for the year ensuing as followeth viz.

choose Benjamin Obear in his room going for said Lovett’s term.
Capt. George Cabot for Ferry Ward Voted to excuse said Cabot and
choose Jonathan Dodge 2nd in said Cabot’s room and stead it to go
for said Cabot’s turn.

Voted for a County Treasurer brought in & sealed up as the law directs.
Voted. That the Town will men their Highways the ensuing year by a The Polls and Estates of the
Inhabitants.
Voted That the sum of 30/ per day be allowed to each man performing a day’s work & 90/ per day
for a good team of four cattle and man to drive the same performing a day’s labor on the
highways the current year.
Voted. That the sum of one thousand pounds be assessed and raised on the ratable polls and estates
of the Inhabitants within this Town to defray the charge of repairing the Highways the current
year.
Voted. That the swine should have liberty to go at-large the ensuing year being yoked and as the law
directs.
Capt. Joseph Rae, Capt. John Low & Mr. William Hazeltine were chosen a Committee to provide
necessaries for the soldiers’ families in the Continental Army agreeable to the resolves of the Great
and General Court.
Voted. That the Town Treasurer be empowered in behalf of the Town to hire a sum of money not
exceeding five hundred pounds and deliver the same to the committee appointed to supply
the soldiers’ families with necessaries the ensuing year to enable them to procure the same.
They to be accountable for the said money.
Voted. That Thomas Hovey should have liberty to work out his highway tax the current year on the
way between the house he lives in and the country road under the inspection of the Surveyor
of the Highways.
Capt. Livermore Whittridge and Mr. Benjamin Shaw was chosen to serve on the Grand Jury at the
Court of the General Sessions of the Peace to be holden at Ipswich on the last Tuesday of March
instant and at the several courts to be holden in said County for one year.
