1778-09-23rd At a Legal Meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly Sept. 23 1778. Henry Herrick Esq. chosen Moderator. Voted. Capt. George Cabot, Col. Larkin Thorndike and Capt. William Bartlett be a Committee to represent to the Hon. Council or to the Commanding officer of the militia of this State the defenseless state of this Town and the hazard the town must be exposed to by marching any part of the militia therefrom at this critical juncture and to pray for liberty that the men now called for may be permitted to remain in the Town till absolute necessity requires their marching to camp and they are desired to acquaint their neighboring towns in like circumstances of our doing on this matter.
