1778-08-01At a Legal Meeting of the inhabitants of the Town Beverly August the 1st. 1778. Josiah Batchelder Jr. Esq. was chosen Moderator. Voted. That the three captains of the Companies of Militia of this Town, with the assistance of their subaltern officers be a Committee in behalf of the Town to procure those thirteen men sent th for from the militia of this Town agreeable to the resolve of the General Court of the 12 of June last in the best manner they can. Voted. That the Col. Henry Herrick, Town Treasurer, with the assistance of Col. Thorndike be empowered in the name and behalf of this Town to hire such sufficient sums of money as shall be necessary for the procuring of the above said men and deliver the same to the Captains of the Militia for that purpose; they to be accountable for the same. Voted. That Capt. Joseph Rae, Capt. John Woodberry, Capt. Isaac Chapman, the three captains of the Companies of Militia of this Town, with the assistance of their subaltern officers, be a Committee in behalf of the Town to procure those twenty-eight men sent from the militia of this Town to reinforce the Army at the state of Rhode Island in the best manner they can. Voted. That Col Henry Herrick, Town Treasurer, with the assistance of Col. Thorndike be empowered in the name and behalf of the Town to hire such sufficient sums of money as shall be necessary for procuring of the aforesaid 28 men and deliver the same to the Committee appointed to procure said men for that purpose; said committee to be accountable for the same. Voted. That Capt. Joseph Rae, Capt. John Woodberry, Capt. Isaac Chapman, the three captains of the Companies of Militia in this Town with the assistance of their subaltern officers be a Committee in the name and behalf of the Town to procure and hire from time to time for the future such a number of men as shall be sent for from the militia of this Town in the best manner they can giving preference to Town inhabitants. Voted. The Col. Henry Herrick, Town Treasurer, be directed and empowered in the name and behalf of this Town to borrow or hire on interest such sums of money as shall be necessary for hiring and procuring of the men that shall from time to time be called for from the militia of this Town to go into the public service for the future and deliver said money to the three captains of the Companies of Militia of this Town, a Committee for that purpose; they to be accountable for the same.
