1777-02-10At a meeting of the Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly legally assembled on th Monday the 10 day of February 1777. Col. Henry Herrick was chosen Moderator of said meeting. Voted that the Town will give to teach noncommissioned officer and private soldiers that hath or shall enlist into the Continental Army for three years or during the war on or before the eighteenth day of February instant the sum of fourteen pounds and to all those of them that were in the Continental Army in 1776, exclusive of the Militia, who shall enlist as above said the additional sum of four pounds exclusive of the above said fourteen pounds, which sums the Town Treasurer is to pay unto them accordingly immediately after their passing muster before the Muster Master of the County taking their receipt for the same. Voted that all monies that have been paid for the purposes of giving men as aforesaid together with the whole of the money that shall be paid for bounty as aforesaid shall be levied and assessed by the Assessors of this Town as soon as may be on the polls and income of all estates both real and personal of all kinds whatsoever that shall arise to any person in said Town within the year 1776 excepting on the polls of all those noncommissioned officers and soldiers that shall enlist into the Continental Army for three years or during the war and shall enlist on or before the eighteenth instant or that have been in the Continental Army during the last year. Voted that the Town Treasurer be and is hereby empowered to hire in behalf of the Town sufficient sums of money as it shall be wanted to pay the bounties of above said and give his security in behalf of the Town for the payment of the same, with lawful interest, for the time til that money shall be collected and paid in to discharge the same.
