1775-11-06th At a legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly November 6.1775. Colonel Henry Herrick was chosen Moderator. Voted that the Committee of Correspondence be directed and empowered in behalf of this Town to appoint a Captain to their Fort or breastwork on Woodberry’s Head and other necessary officers and men to exercise the cannon in said Fort and pay them a reasonable sum for their service and also to enlist a number of men to make up 40 in the whole to repair to the Fort as their alarm post in case of an alarm. Voted that the Committee of Correspondence be empowered in behalf of this Town to make such regulations for the governing, keeping and using of their two fields pieces of cannon and lately procured and mounted for the safety of this Town and give such directions for managing the same as they shall think necessary. It was put to vote to see if the Town will choose firewards and it passed in the negative. Voted that the Committee of Correspondence be empowered in behalf of this Town to throw up breastwork in any other place in the Town that has not already been appointed and give such directions therefore as they shall think will be most for the safety of the Town in general. It was put to vote to see if the Town would stop up their harbor and it passed in the negative. Voted that the Selectmen be empowered in the name and behalf of this Town to petition to General Washington or any other Department for ammunition and men for the safety of this Town whenever they shall think it necessary and expedient. Voted that the Selectmen be desired and empowered in behalf of this Town to procured two hundred weight of powder in the best manner they can at the cost of the Town and are hereby empowered to hire a sufficient sum of money to procure the same and give their securities therefore in the name and behalf of this Town. Voted that it is the desire of this Town that the officers of the militia both of the alarm and train th bands to inquire into situation of their companies on the 15 instant at one o’clock afternoon and see that they are equipped as the law directs.
