1774-11-17th At a legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly November 17 1774. Nathaniel Woodberry, Isaac Kimball, Samuel Foster and Asa Leech were chosen to serve on the Petit Jury at the Court of General Sessions of the Peace and Inferior Court of Common Pleas to be holden at Salem on the last Tuesday of December next. Capt. Henry Herrick was chosen to serve as Moderator of said meeting for the remaining business to be acted upon. Voted that there Constables for the year 1773 and 1774 be hereby directed to pay in as soon as may be the Provincial money that they now have or shall collect unto Henry Gardner Esq. of Stow Receiver General till further order from the Provincial Congress or some future House of Representatives agreeable to the late resolves of said Provincial Congress and the said Constables producing his receipt therefore the Town do hereby indemnify said Constables from all charge that may arise to them by reason of the Compliance with the said directions. Voted that the Selectmen be directed to take effectual care with out delay to see that the Town be provided with their full complement of arms and ammunition as the law directs. Voted that the Town much approve of the Resolves, proceedings and association of the American Continental Congress and adopt the same to be carried into execution. Voted that Ens. Josiah Batchelder should be one of the Committee of Correspondence of this Town in the room of John Leech Esq. deceased. Voted to enlarge the Committee of Correspondence that it should consist of thirteen in the whole. Voted that Capt. Joshua Cleaves, Capt. Larkin Thorndike, Joseph Wood, Capt. Nicholas Thorndike, Capt. William Bartlett, Andrew Cabot, Dr. Joseph Orne and Capt. Benjamin Lovett Jr. should be added to the Committee of Correspondence of this Town as aforesaid to enlarge the same. Voted that the Committee of Correspondence of this Town be and are hereby appointed a Committee in behalf of this Town for to carry into execution the Resolves, proceedings and associations of the Provincial and American Continental Congresses. Voted that if any number of men not exceeding thirty-two shall enter into agreement to purchase a good fire engine and the necessary apparatus and contract to improve the same for extinguishing fire as is customary in other towns then in such case they shall be excused from serving in any Town office as also from serving as Jurymen.
