1849-11-12 ElectionEssex, ss. To one of the Constables of the town of Beverly,
Greeting.-
You are hereby required in the name of Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to notify and warn,
in the usual manner, the qualified voters of said town to meet at the Town Hall on Monday the
twelfth day of November current, at nine o’clock before noon, for the following purposes, viz.: -
To decide whether the town will send one or more Representatives to the next General Court,
and if they so decide, to give in their ballots for the same.
Also, To give in their ballots for a Governor and Lieutenant Governor of this Commonwealth,
and for Senators for this District of Essex, for the ensuing political year. -
The ballots will be received on one piece of paper, and the poll will open immediately after
deciding upon sending representatives, and close at four o’clock afternoon. -
Hereof fail not but make due return of this warrant, with your doings thereon, before said
time.-
Given under our hands and seal this first day of November in the year eighteen hundred and
forty-nine.

Pursuant to the warrant upon the page next preceding, the qualified voters of the town of
Beverly, met at the Town Hall on Monday the twelfth day of November in the year eighteen hundred
forty-nine, at nine o’clock before noon, and
Voted, To send two representatives to the next General Court, and close the poll at four o’clock
afternoon. -
The electors then proceeded to give in their ballots for the several purposes named in said
warrant, the results of which in reference to Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Senators are
recorded upon the pages following; and the whole number of ballots for Representatives to General
Court was eight hundred and nine: necessary to a choice four hundred and five; and the said ballots
were for the following persons, viz.: -
William H. Lovett, four hundred and thirty-one votes
Paul Hildreth, four hundred and seventeen votes
Joseph E. Ober, three hundred and seventy-eight votes
Robert Rantoul Jr., three hundred and sixty-seven votes
Israel Trask, two votes, and the following had one vote each, Haskett D. Whitney - John Wilson -
Samuel Woodbury - John Porter 2d - Thomas B. Smith - William K. Bailey - Charles W. Lord -
Samuel S. Ober - James Hill - Edward Pousland.
And Messrs. William H. Lovett and Paul Hildreth having each more than the requisite number
for a choice, are elected, and were so declared in open town meeting.

At a legal meeting of the Inhabitants of the Town of Beverly in the County of Essex and
Commonwealth of Massachusetts, qualified by the constitution to vote for Governor and Lieutenant
Governor, holden on the twelfth day of November, being the second Monday of said month, in the
year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine, for the purpose of giving in their [votes]
for Governor and Lieutenant Governor of said Commonwealth, the whole number persons who gave
in their votes was ascertained, as is directed in the Revised Statutes, (Chap. 4, Sec. 13,) by counting
the whole number of separate ballots given in; and the whole number of ballots was, for Governor
eight hundred and nine -
And the whole number of votes given in for Governor were sorted, counted and recorded,
and declaration thereof made as by the Constitution is directed; and said votes were for the following
persons; viz.: -
George N. Briggs, four hundred and thirty-three votes
For Governor George S. Boutwell Graf Groton, two hundred and thirty-four votes
Stephen C. Phillips Salem, one hundred and forty-two votes
And the whole number of ballots was, for Lieutenant Governor - eight hundred and nine -
And the whole number of votes given in for Lieutenant Governor were sorted, counted and
recorded, and declaration thereof made as by the Constitution is directed; and said votes were for the
following persons; viz.:-

And the whole number of votes were sorted, counted and recorded, and declaration thereof
