1847-11-08 ElectionAt a legal meeting of the inhabitants of the town of Beverly, in the County of Essex, and
Commonwealth of Massachusetts, qualified by the Constitution to vote for Senators holden on the
eighth day of November, being the second Monday of said month, in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and forty-seven, for the purpose of giving in their votes for Senators for the
District of Essex, the whole number of persons who gave in their votes was ascertained, as he is
directed in the Revised Statutes, (Chap. 4, Sec. 13) by counting the number of separate ballots given
in; and the whole number of ballots was - five hundred and fifty-nine.
And the whole number of votes were sorted, counted and recorded, and declaration thereof
made as by the Constitution is directed; and said votes were for the following persons; viz.: -
Jonathan C. Perkins of Salem; Three hundred and forty votes
John W. Lowe of Gloucester; Three hundred and forty votes
James Gregory of Marblehead; Three hundred and forty votes
Chester H. Balch of Newburyport; Three hundred and forty votes
E. James M. Hale of Haverhill; Three hundred and twenty-nine votes
Edwin Lawrence of Newburyport, One hundred and sixty-four votes
Edmund Kimball of Bradford, One hundred and sixty-four votes
Nathaniel J. Lord of Salem, One hundred and sixty-four votes
J. M. Sargent of Lynn, One hundred and sixty-four votes
George Osborne of Danvers, One hundred and sixty-three votes
William Carey of Amesbury, Fifty-six votes
Nathan D. Chase of Lynn, Fifty-five votes
A D. Bacon of Gloucester, Fifty-five votes
Stephen Barker of Methuen, Fifty-five votes
B. F. S. Griffin of West Newbury, Fifty-four votes
Albert Thorndike of Beverly, One vote
Joseph D. Tuck of Beverly, Four votes

for Governor and Lieutenant Governor of said Commonwealth, the whole number of persons who
gave in their votes was ascertained, as is directed in the Revised Statutes, (Chap. 4, Sec. 13,) by
counting the whole number of separate ballots given in; and the whole number of ballots was - five
hundred and fifty-eight -
And the whole number of votes given in for Governor were sorted, counted, and recorded,
and declaration thereof made as by the Constitution is directed; and said votes were for the following
persons; viz.. -

George N. Briggs of Pittsfield - three hundred forty-two votes
Caleb Cushing of Newburyport - one hundred and sixty-two votes
Samuel E. Sewall of Malden - fifty-three votes
Charles Sumner of Boston - one vote
And the whole number of votes given in for Lieutenant Governor were sorted, counted, and
recorded, and declaration thereof made as by the Constitution is directed; and said votes were for the
following persons; viz..-
For Lieutenant Governor
John Reed of Yarmouth, three hundred and thirty-nine votes
Henry W. Cushman of Bernardston, one hundred and sixty-four votes
John M. Brewster of Pittsfield, fifty-six votes
Whole number of ballots - five hundred and fifty-nine -
