1847-02-02Essex, ss. To one of the Constables of the town of Beverly - Greeting - You are hereby required in the name of Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to notify and warn in the usual manner the qualified voters of said Town to meet at the Town Hall on Tuesday the second day of February next at Two o’clock, Afternoon, for the following purposes: viz.- st 1. To decide the manner of choosing a Moderator and to choose the same - d 2. To see if the town will cause a new Fire Engine and apparatus to be purchased and located at Engine House numbered Two, and raise money for that purpose or otherwise as may be deemed expedient - and also to act and do anything then deemed necessary to render the Fire Department of the town and all its branches thoroughly efficient by raising and appropriating money therefore or otherwise - agreeably to the petition of Josiah Lovett and 46 others - Hereof fail not but make due return of this warrant with your doings thereon before said time - Given under our hands and seal this twenty-second day of January A.D. 1847. Beverly January 23 A.D. 1847 - Pursuant to the foregoing warrant I have notified the persons therein named as therein directed - William D. At a legal meeting of the qualified voters of the town of Beverly held at the Town Hall in said Town on Tuesday the second day of February in the year Eighteen hundred and forty-seven, at Two o’clock Afternoon, pursuant to the warrant on the next preceding page- Voted. To choose a Moderator by hand vote - Voted. That John Safford be Moderator - A motion was then made to place No. 2 Engine at the Farms, No. 1 at the Cove, first putting them in repair, and then purchasing a New Engine and Apparatus to locate the same in No.2 Engine House - this motion submitted by Mr. Israel Foster 2d elicited much debate, as well as the various divisions and subdivisions of the question and also the several amendments proposed, among which was an amendment submitted by Mr. Herbert Standley to provide an Engine for Mt. Serat [Montserrat] - This was rejected, but an amendment submitted by Mr. William Ober to provide a new Engine for the Farms of the same capacity and quality of the one proposed for No.2, was adopted 157 to 89 and then the whole motion was rejected- A motion was then made by Stephens Baker Esq. to authorize the Firewards to exchange Engine No.2 for one that will answer the purpose of an efficient organization of a Company at that location - and at the same time annul the vote of the last meeting as to the pay of Engine Man - as 45 men had agreed to join a company for a New Engine at three dollars per year - after some further discussion this motion was also rejected 98 to 139 - Among those who participated in the various discussions of this meeting were Israel Foster 2d, Herbert Standley, Edward Pousland, Jonathan Batchelder, Charles L. Walden, Samuel Dike, Israel Trask, William Ober, principally against a new Engine for No. 2 - also John Tuck 2d. And in its favor, were Stephens Baker, Robert Goodwin, Daniel Hildreth. It was finally after proposing to adjourn this meeting & Voted. That this meeting be dissolved, which was accordingly declared so to be - A true record Attest John I. Baker, Town Clerk.
