Essex, ss: To one of the Constables of Town Beverly. Greeting.
You are hereby required in the name of said Commonwealth, to notify and warn the qualified
voters of said Town to meet at the Town Hall on Monday the ninth day of July next for the following
purposes: -
1st. To decide the manner of choosing a Moderator and to choose the same.
2d. To see what action the Town will take in relation to the request of the Trustees of the Public
Library, that two rooms in the Town Hall be assigned for the use of said Library.
3d. To see if the Town will accept and allow of the widening and extension of the town way known
as Federal Street according to the report of the Selectmn thereon, now filed in the office of the Town
Clerk.
4th. To see if the Town will accept and allow of the widening of that part of Abbott Street lying
between Lothrop Street and the Sea, according to the report of the Selectmen, now on file in the
office of the Town Clerk.
5th. To see what action the Town will take in relation to the grade of Bow Street. - per petition of
John Bradshaw & others.
6th. To see if the Town will repeal so much of the Bylaws of the Town, as relate to the muzzling of
dogs running at-large in said town; - per petition of William A. Foster & others.
7th. To see what action, if any, the Town will take in relation to an act passed at the recent session
of the Legislature, entitled an “Act concerning School Books.”
Hereof fail not, but make due return of this warrant, with your doings thereon.

Beverly June 30, 1855. Pursuant to the foregoing warrant I have notified the persons therein named
as therein directed by posting notices according to the Town Regulations.

At a legal meeting of the qualified voters of the Town Beverly, held pursuant to the warrant on the
next preceding page, at the Town Hall on Monday the ninth day of July in the year Eighteen Hundred
and Fifty Five at Two o’clock PM.
Voted. To choose Moderator by hand vote, and Stephens Baker was thus elected.
Voted. That the request of the Trustees of the Public Library, that the rooms now occupied by the
Social Library, & Assessors, be fitted up for the use of the Public Library, be granted.
Voted. That the 3d Article of the warrant in relation to Federal Street, be indefinitely postponed.
Voted. That the 4th Article of the warrant in relation to Abbott Street be indefinitely postponed, by
a vote of 48 to 41.
Voted. That the 5th Article in relation to the grade of Bow Street be indefinitely postponed.
Voted. That the 6th Article of the warrant in relation to the repeal of the Dog laws be indefinitely
postponed.
On motion of Charles H. Stocker it was then
Voted. That the Selectmen are instructed to cause the existing Bylaws of the Town in relation to
dogs to be rigidly enforced.
The 7th Article of the warrant concerning School Books was then taken up,
and a motion offered by Jonathan Batchelder to indefinitely postpone the whole subject, was
negatived by a vote of 39 in favor to 45 opposed.
On motion of David C. Foster, it was then
Voted. That the School Committee are hereby instructed to purchase such books and stationery as
may be necessary to supply the public schools in this Town according to the provisions of the Act

passed May 21 1855. 45 in favor 22 opposed.
Voted. That this meeting be dissolved, and that the Moderator so declared it.
