Essex, ss:
To one of the Constables of the town of Beverly. - Greeting.
You are hereby required in the name of said Commonwealth, to notify and warn in the usual manner
the qualified voters of said Town, to meet at the Town Hall on Tuesday the fourth day of November
next, at Ninth O’clock before noon, for the following purposes: - viz.
To see if the town will elect one or more persons to represent them in the next General Court,
and, if they so decide, to give in their ballots for the purpose of choosing the same.
To give in their ballots for Electors of President and Vice President of United States for the
next Presidential Term: - to wit. For Two Electors at large and one for each Congressional District,
and for a Representative to the next Congress of the United States from District Number Six.
To give in their ballots for a Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary, Treasurer and
Receiver General, Auditor of Accounts, and Attorney General of this Commonwealth, and a
Councillor for Councillor District No. Five.
To give in their ballots for a County Commissioner, two Special Commissioners, three
Commissioners of Insolvency, Register of Insolvency, Sheriff, Register of Probate, and Clerk of the
Courts for the County of Essex, Five Senators for the District of Essex, and a District Attorney for
the Eastern District of Massachusetts.
The votes for all the above named officers will be received on one piece of paper and the polls will
be closed at four o’clock unless otherwise determined by the meeting.
Here are fail not but make due return of this warrant with your doings thereon
before said time.

At a meeting of the qualified voters of the town of Beverly, held at the Town Hall in said Town on
Tuesday the fourth day of November in the year 1856 at Not clock before noon, pursuant to the
foregoing warrant.
Voted. To send two representatives to the next General Court, and also to close the poll at four
o’clock P.M.
The Electors then proceeded to bring in their ballots for Representatives, and other officers named
in the warrant and at the close of the poll the votes for Representatives were sorted, counted and
reported, and declaration thereof made, as by law are required in the following is a resolve, whole
number of ballots nine hundred eighty
Charles Stephens had seven hundred ninety-four votes.
John Knowlton had seven hundred ninety-three votes.
Abraham H. Fiske had one hundred eighteen votes
Daniel Foster had one hundred seventeen votes
Eben Smith had sixty-four votes
Jeremiah Wallis had fifty-nine votes
William D. Crosfield had Five votes and Wm. Endicott, Dean Chapman, Peacock Trask, Philip Webb,
Shadrack Fisk, John G. Smith, David Crowell, James Hill, Elisha Woodberry and John Ober had one
vote each.
And Charles Stephens and John Knowlton having highest number of votes were declared elected.
